The ride home from the art show was quieter than Sanya had anticipated. Arjun was usually the one to fill silences with his thoughtful observations or playful remarks, but tonight, he seemed distant. His hands rested lightly on the steering wheel, eyes focused on the road, but his mind seemed elsewhere.
Sanya stole a glance at him, wondering what was going on in his head. Was he thinking about Rahul? About what he had said? The encounter had been brief, but it had undoubtedly shifted the energy between them.
Unable to hold back anymore, she finally asked, "You're quiet. Something on your mind?"
Arjun hesitated for a moment before responding, "It's nothing serious. Just... wondering about your friend Rahul."
Sanya sighed, leaning back in her seat. "He's not really a 'friend' anymore. We used to be close, but we drifted apart."
Arjun nodded slowly but didn't say anything. The silence stretched between them again, and Sanya found herself growing frustrated. It wasn't like Arjun to hold back, and she wanted to understand what he was feeling.
"Arjun," she said softly, "is something bothering you?"
He took a deep breath, gripping the wheel a little tighter. "I guess... I didn't like the way he looked at you. It felt like he was staking a claim or something."
Sanya blinked, taken aback by his words. She hadn't expected this kind of honesty from him. "You think he was trying to...?"
Arjun let out a small chuckle, shaking his head. "Forget it. I don't know what I'm saying. Maybe I'm just overthinking things."
But Sanya wasn't convinced. She could hear the unspoken words in his tone, the hesitation in his voice. And for the first time, she wondered—was Arjun feeling jealous?
The thought sent a strange thrill through her, but she quickly pushed it aside. This wasn't the time to analyze emotions. Right now, she just wanted to ease whatever tension had settled between them.
"Rahul has always been a little... confident," she admitted. "But that doesn't mean I have any interest in reconnecting with him like that."
Arjun's lips twitched slightly, almost as if he wanted to smile but held back. "Good to know."
The rest of the drive passed in relative ease, and by the time they reached Sanya's apartment building, the awkwardness between them had mostly faded. She turned to him before getting out of the car.
"Thanks for tonight, Arjun. It was really nice."
He met her gaze, his brown eyes searching hers for something she couldn't quite name. "Yeah, it was."
For a moment, neither of them moved. The air between them was thick with something unsaid, something just out of reach. Then, as if breaking free from a spell, Arjun smiled—a small, genuine one that made Sanya's heart stutter.
"Goodnight, Sanya," he said, his voice soft.
"Goodnight, Arjun," she whispered, stepping out of the car.
As she walked toward her building, she could feel his eyes on her. And for the first time in a long while, she allowed herself to acknowledge the possibility that what she felt for Arjun wasn't just admiration or friendship.
