Time For A Change

Miles ran his fingers through his curly chocolate brown hair, "I heard you've been hanging out with this guy lately." His dark obsidian eyes briefly passed over Nathan's figure, then darted back to Brit. "I guess it's true. I didn't know creeps were your type."

"N-No I—he's just a friend! We're not---" She bit her lip. Why was she even explaining herself? Could she be any more pathetic?

"Brad and the other guys are always messing with him. I'm just looking out for him."

"Hmm." He hummed. "It's good that you're helping him out and all, but he's a guy, you know? An outcast like him is bound to catch feelings for a girl who keeps being nice. Are you sure he hasn't fallen head over heels for you already?"

Her eyes bulged. "That's not---Don't say that! You're making him uncomfortable."

"I'm making him uncomfortable? He seems pretty fine to me."

"Still…" She mumbled, "…why would anyone like me, anyway?"

Miles stared over at her silently. His eyes felt like they were drilling her for something, some kind of truth, maybe? She scratched her arm nervously, diverting her gaze.

Then…she heard a laugh suddenly rumble up his chest. She looked up, catching his pearly white teeth as his lips spread across his face. "You're right. Who would fall for a girl like you?"

She flinched, feeling a hard pang in her chest.

Miles was always like that…inconsiderate with his words. He knew she liked him and he knew they were mates and yet…why did he keep hurting her? He never hesitated to make out with Sophia in front of her either. She understood he was in a relationship, so he couldn't just break it off. But he had never once given her an answer, he never once told her upfront that he didn't want her. The bond between them was just there…hanging.

Did he want to reject her or not?

"C'mon. Let's get to class." He walked over, taking her hand in his. Tingles erupted across their skin but neither of them acknowledged it.

"O-Oh…" She glanced back at Nathan apologetically. "I'm gonna go, sorry. You can get to cla---" Her lips ceased their movement when her free hand was suddenly snatched from her side. Nathan had grabbed onto her. The hold was slightly tight, enough that she knew she couldn't break out of it easily.

"W-What is it?" She blinked.

But Nathan didn't look at her, instead, his hard gaze was fixated on the hand Miles was holding.

"Let go." Miles demanded, his lips setting into a thin line as he glared at him. Nathan didn't budge, in fact, he returned the glare fearlessly. They were both towering over her, glaring at each other with a dangerous intensity. Nathan was inches taller than Miles.

Brit looked between them, panic coursing through her. Lunchtime was over and the halls would soon be full of people heading to class. Were they trying to cause a scene?

"G-Guys…" She squeaked up hesitantly, "Its class time. Miles, we have the same class, right? So you're with me. Nate, you should probably leave before Brad gets back."

She stared at Nate, hoping and praying that he'd listen to her. But Nate's hold did not ease…it got even tighter.

"N-Nate?"

His eyes finally moved to Brittany and in an instant, her heart stopped. Suddenly, the way he was staring at her made her want to close up like a clam. His amber eyes that appeared darker than before, felt like they were commanding her, a command that she could not disobey. What was this feeling?

She trembled as she snatched her hand out of Miles', holding it to her chest.

"M-Miles, I think I'll h-help him get to his class first. Y-You go ahead without me." She didn't wait for Miles' response. Instead, she took off down the hall, her small wrist stuck between Nate's fingers. He followed behind her, and as usual, not a word came from his lips.

She dropped him off at his class and luckily, he willing let go of her without her having to ask. But when she turned to leave, he watched her back like a hawk, straight up until she disappeared from his sight.

Brittany nibbled at her nail, a bad feeling in her gut. She didn't know why he was angry, but it scared her, frightened her even. Was it because of what Miles said? Did it upset him?

She shook her head. It didn't matter why he was angry. This was a sign, a sign to stop whatever they had going on. So what if he had no friends? So what if the others messed with him? Whatever went on between him and Brad's group was no longer her business.

It was finally time to start avoiding Nathan.

Days after that incident, the whole school were gathered in the main hall. The place was crowded and there were lots of murmurs. But standing up front were Brad's group plus Sophia, Jessie and Kalia. No one dared to brush against them. It was a few minutes before the supposed arrival of that Alpha, and because of that, her friends were wearing the most vulgar party fits on school premises.

They had on very short dresses that barely covered their thighs, their breasts were on display and they even wore their highest heels. No one had a thing to say about it because of their parents' status. Even if they walked around in their underwear, she doubted anyone would reprimand them.

She had decided not to group with them for the time being. They probably wouldn't want her next to them either. After all, she was only wearing her usual T-shirt and jeans while everyone else came looking their best.

What was it about this Alpha's son that made the girls crazy? Was it money? Power? Still, weren't they scared of having such a man as their mate? What if he suddenly decided to rip their throat out while doing the dirty?

Brittany sighed, her eyes sweeping over the hall. She didn't see Nathan at all today. Recently, she had been avoiding him. Whenever he brought her drinks, she didn't take it. Whenever he walked up to her, she ignored him. And whenever she saw him, she headed the other direction. He hadn't gotten the memo as yet since he kept showing up in front of her anyway, but today…he was nowhere to be seen. It was a bit odd.

"Everyone settle down!" Mrs. Henry came up onto the podium and all chattering instantly seized. Brittany looked up, her arms crossing over her chest. She wasn't really interested. If anything, she just wanted the day to end.

"Alpha Denzel is here. I want all of you to give him a warm welcome!"

Everyone became dead silent as the back door opened. A man in a full suit of black walked in, a grin on his face. He waved at the crowd.

Brittany cocked her head. With nicely trimmed facial hair, neat attire and cheerful amber eyes, he looked too different from what anyone would've expected. He was very short too. And what exactly was that eerie grin for?

He walked up onto the podium and countless eyes followed his every move. Those at the back begun drifting towards the front and those at the front bundled up together tightly as they basically begged to catch his eye. All attention was on Alpha Denzel…until a hooded figure suddenly came through the door behind him.

'A bodyguard?' Brittany instantly thought… but then she noticed the familiar eyes hiding under that person's hoody.

"N-Nate?"
