The stolen hover vehicle tore through the skies above New Asemeri, weaving between towering spires and neon-lit highways, plasma bursts from security drones streaking past its hull.
Tlandar gripped the edge of his seat, his heartbeat a thunderous rhythm against his ribs. They were running out of time.
Ahead, the city's energy barrier pulsed, growing stronger with each second as its containment field fully powered up.
Akashma's amber eyes darted across the vehicle's interface, her fingers flicking over holographic controls, pulling up the energy grid's readout.
"There! The barrier is weakest at that point!" she shouted, pointing toward a distant section where the energy flickered faintly.
Tlandar squinted. He didn't see anything. But he trusted her.
"Are you sure?" he called over the roar of the engines.
Akashma narrowed her eyes. "It's now or never."
She pulled the hovercraft hard to the right, angling toward the unstable section of the barrier just as the drones closed in behind them.
A Glimpse of Weakness
Akashma's mind worked at the speed of instinct.
The barrier wasn't fully aligned yet—she had seen the pattern in its pulses, the momentary disruption every few seconds. Using the stolen hover vehicle's sensors, she pinpointed the fluctuation—a slight delay in the barrier's synchronization. The weak spot would only last for a fraction of a second—but it was enough.
She exhaled sharply. "Tlandar, brace yourself!"
Tlandar barely had time to react before—
A plasma blast struck their rear thrusters.
The vehicle lurched, flames licking at its hull as it spiraled toward the barrier.
Akashma gritted her teeth, fighting the controls. "Hold together, damn you!"
The energy barrier loomed ahead, glowing brighter, stronger—and yet, at the very center, a faint shimmer of instability flickered.
The window was closing.
All or Nothing
Tlandar felt his breath hitch. "We're not gonna make it."
Akashma's eyes flashed with determination. "Yes, we will."
She yanked a manual override, diverting every ounce of power into forward thrust.
The engines screamed, flames erupting from the damaged core.
The barrier's weak point flickered one last time—
And then—
They hit it.
Impact and Escape
The world turned to fire and static.
For a split second, Tlandar saw nothing—felt nothing. The energy around them roared like a dying star, the force rattling every bone in his body.
The hovercraft buckled—metal tearing, sparks bursting across the controls.
Then—
Silence.
The vehicle emerged on the other side, tumbling through the sky, its engines sputtering dangerously close to failure.
Tlandar coughed, his vision blurry. "Did we—?"
Akashma didn't answer. She was too busy fighting to keep them airborne.
They weren't safe yet.
Behind them, the barrier fully stabilized, sealing the city shut. They had made it—but barely.
But now, they were free.
And the real journey had just begun.
