Zi Yan sat in the dimly lit underground hideout, her mind restless despite the silence around her. The flickering light from the small lamp cast long shadows on the walls, making the tiny room feel even smaller. Though they had found temporary safety, the weight of their situation pressed down on her like a heavy chain.
Lu Yichen sat across from her, his fingers tapping lightly on the wooden table as he thought. His sharp eyes remained calm, but she could see the storm hidden behind them. He was planning, calculating their next move.
"We can't stay here for long," he finally said. "The Guo family will not stop. They will search every corner of this city. If they suspect we are underground, they'll use every means to flush us out."
Zi Yan clenched her fists. "Then what do we do? Keep running forever?"
Lu Yichen shook his head. "No. Running is not a solution. We need to fight back. But before we strike, we must have a plan. A careless move will only put us in more danger."
Zi Yan took a deep breath. She knew he was right. But the thought of hiding while her enemies continued their schemes made her blood boil. She had already lost too much. She refused to lose any more.
"I want to reclaim my life," she said firmly. "I won't be a pawn in their hands."
Lu Yichen looked at her, his lips curving slightly. "Good. Because once we step out of here, there's no turning back."
Lu Yichen took out his phone and dialed a number. His voice was low as he spoke. "It's me. I need a favor."
Zi Yan listened, though she couldn't hear the voice on the other end. Whoever it was, Lu Yichen trusted them enough to call at a time like this.
After a short exchange, he ended the call and turned back to her. "We have a safe house on the outskirts of the city. A trusted ally will take us there. But we have to be careful. The Guo family might have people watching the exits of this tunnel."
Zi Yan nodded. "Then let's not waste time."
Before leaving, Lu Yichen grabbed a small bag from under the table. Inside were a few necessities—cash, fake identification, and a weapon. He handed a small knife to Zi Yan.
"Keep this with you," he said. "If anything happens, don't hesitate."
Zi Yan took the knife, her fingers tightening around the handle. She had never been the kind of woman to resort to violence, but she knew she had no choice.
With that, they stepped back into the tunnels, moving carefully through the dark passageways.
They walked in silence, their footsteps barely making a sound against the damp floor. The air was thick and musty, but neither of them complained. Every turn they took, Lu Yichen checked their surroundings, making sure they weren't being followed.
After almost an hour of walking, they reached an exit—a small, hidden doorway leading to an abandoned warehouse. Lu Yichen slowly pushed it open, peering outside.
"All clear," he whispered.
They stepped out into the cold night. The warehouse was old, its walls covered in graffiti. It looked deserted, but neither of them lowered their guard.
Lu Yichen led the way through the dark streets, sticking to the shadows. Zi Yan followed closely, her heart pounding. If anyone spotted them now, they wouldn't have time to escape.
As they approached a black car parked near the alley, a figure stepped out from the driver's seat. It was a man in his forties, dressed in dark clothes. His sharp gaze landed on Lu Yichen first, then on Zi Yan.
"You're late," the man said.
"Had to be careful," Lu Yichen replied.
The man nodded. "Get in."
Without hesitation, they entered the car. As soon as the doors closed, the man started the engine and drove off.
"Where are we going?" Zi Yan asked.
The man, whose name was Chen Wei, kept his eyes on the road. "To a place where no one will find you."
Zi Yan felt a strange sense of relief. Maybe, just maybe, they would have a moment to breathe.
The car drove for nearly an hour before stopping in front of an old countryside villa. The area was quiet, far from the busy city. Trees surrounded the house, and the night air was crisp and cool.
Chen Wei turned off the engine. "This place belongs to an old friend. It's empty now, so you can stay here for a while."
Lu Yichen nodded in approval. "Good."
They stepped out of the car, and Zi Yan looked around. It wasn't luxurious, but it was better than a cold underground tunnel.
Once inside, Chen Wei turned to Lu Yichen. "The Guo family is moving fast. They have people searching the city, offering rewards for any information on Zi Yan. It's only a matter of time before they dig up something useful."
Zi Yan's chest tightened. "They won't stop, will they?"
"No," Chen Wei said. "Not until they get what they want."
Lu Yichen's expression darkened. "Then we need to move faster. We can't stay passive anymore."
Zi Yan knew what that meant. It was time to stop running. Time to fight back.
As the night deepened, Lu Yichen and Chen Wei sat at the table, discussing strategies. Zi Yan listened carefully, absorbing every detail.
"The Guo family's weakness is their greed," Lu Yichen said. "They control many industries, but that also makes them vulnerable. If we strike the right places, we can weaken them."
Chen Wei nodded. "I have a few contacts who can help expose some of their illegal activities. If we push the right information to the authorities, we can cause them trouble."
Zi Yan clenched her fists. "I want to take back my life. I want them to regret everything they've done to me."
Lu Yichen met her gaze, his eyes steady. "And you will. But we need to be patient. Revenge is best served cold."
Zi Yan took a deep breath. She was ready to fight. Ready to face whatever came next.
The storm was coming. And this time, she wouldn't be the one running.
