CHAPTER 12

Chapter Twelve: Bound by Fire

The world outside Adrian's penthouse was still, but inside, a storm raged.

Elena could feel it in the way he paced, in the way his muscles tensed beneath his shirt, in the way his gaze flickered toward her—dark, intense, and filled with unspoken words.

She had promised to stay.

Promised to stand by his side despite the danger that lurked in the shadows.

And yet, as the weight of that promise settled over them, she realized just how much it truly meant.

Adrian wasn't just a man with secrets.

He was a man at war—with his past, with his enemies, and now… with himself.

And she was caught in the middle of it all.

But she wouldn't run.

Not now.

Not ever.

A Past That Won't Stay Buried

Adrian exhaled sharply, raking a hand through his hair as he stared down at the note.

"Stay away from him."

The words were simple, but their meaning was clear.

Someone wanted to separate them.

And that wasn't going to happen.

"Elena," he said finally, his voice steady but laced with an edge of something dangerous. "Whoever sent this note… they know about you now."

She swallowed hard. "And what does that mean?"

His eyes met hers, dark and unreadable. "It means they'll come for you."

A chill ran down her spine, but she refused to let fear consume her. "Then tell me who they are, Adrian. Stop keeping me in the dark."

His jaw tightened, as though he were fighting some internal battle. But then, finally, he spoke.

"There was a time when I wasn't… the man you know." His voice was low, careful. "I built my empire on ruthless decisions. Business rivals, underground dealings, powerful enemies—I walked away from it. But not everyone forgave me for that."

Elena's heart pounded. "You're saying… this is revenge?"

Adrian let out a humorless chuckle. "Revenge. Control. Obsession. It could be any of those things."

A heavy silence filled the room.

Then he stepped toward her, his gaze burning into hers. "But I swear, I won't let them touch you."

His words sent shivers through her, but she refused to be a damsel in distress.

"I'm not afraid," she whispered.

Adrian's lips curved into a ghost of a smile. "You should be."

But instead of pulling away, he reached out—his fingers brushing against her cheek, his touch searing.

And just like that, the air between them changed.

A Love That Defies the Odds

Adrian had tried to resist her.

Tried to keep his distance.

But with Elena standing before him, fire in her eyes and unwavering determination in her voice, he knew it was a losing battle.

She was in his world now.

And he wasn't going to let her go.

"Elena…" His voice was rough as he reached for her, his hands sliding around her waist, pulling her closer.

She sucked in a breath, her heart hammering against her ribs. "Adrian, what are you—"

He cut her off with a kiss.

Not gentle.

Not hesitant.

But fierce, consuming, and utterly reckless.

His lips claimed hers with an urgency that sent fire racing through her veins. She melted against him, her fingers tangling in his hair, pulling him closer, needing more.

There was no past.

No threats.

No world outside this moment.

There was only him.

And the way he made her feel alive.

The Darkness That Follows

The sound of a phone ringing shattered the moment.

Adrian pulled back, cursing under his breath as he reached for his phone.

Elena, breathless and dazed, watched as his expression hardened. Whatever he saw on the screen changed everything.

"What is it?" she asked, her pulse still racing.

His grip tightened on the phone.

Then, in a voice colder than she had ever heard before, he said:

"They've made their first move."

Elena's stomach dropped.

"What do you mean?" she whispered.

Adrian exhaled slowly, his jaw clenching. "Someone broke into your apartment."

The world tilted beneath her feet.

She staggered back, her breath coming in sharp gasps. "My—my apartment?"

Adrian nodded, his expression dark. "They trashed the place. Sent a message."

Fear coiled in her chest, but beneath it, something else stirred—anger.

She had spent too much of her life being afraid.

She wasn't going to let them win.

"They want me scared," she said, her voice steady despite the storm inside her. "But I won't be."

Adrian's gaze flickered with something—pride, maybe even admiration.

Then, softly, he said: "I won't let them hurt you, Elena."

She met his eyes, determination burning in her own.

"Then let's fight back."

A Dangerous Game Begins

Adrian had always been a man who played his cards close to his chest.

But now, for the first time, he had something to lose.

And that made him dangerous.

If his enemies wanted to drag Elena into this war, then he would make them regret it.

Because he wasn't just fighting for himself anymore.

He was fighting for her.

And he would burn the world down before he let them take her away from him.
