A young adult woke up, his eyes screaming emptiness. Lying in bed, he stared at the ceiling and reached out a hand as if trying to grasp something. But then, with a sigh, he sat up.
"Still nothing special," he thought miserably.
He swung his legs over the edge of the bed, slipped on his slippers, and stood up. Walking out of his room, he headed straight to the bathroom to clean himself up.
By the time he stepped out, he was smiling, looking just like any other young man—carefree and ready to enjoy the day.
"Well, I'm off to have the perfect day!" he said excitedly.
But in his mind, he was berating himself, calling himself pathetic.
Later, in the classroom, the teacher was taking attendance.
"...Finn Picador," the teacher called out.
The young man we've been following raised his hand. "Present!" Finn responded before the teacher moved on.
Meanwhile, Finn was chatting with his best friend, a young woman with a goth aesthetic.
"So, Neth, how's that relationship with the president going?" Finn asked with a grin.
"Lucky me, I make a childhood friend, and she ends up getting bagged by another woman," he thought bitterly, roasting himself in his imagination.
Antoneth shot him a look, as if questioning whether he even had other friends. "You didn't hear? Apparently, that b!tch is straight as a pole," she muttered, emphasizing the curse word with irritation.
"Yes! I grabbed the flag! Thank you, writer! I know this is going to be a harem route with crazy strong girls but a weak MC," Finn thought dramatically.
Without hesitation, he smacked Antoneth on the back of her head.
"Neth~! No bad words, you idiot. Now say the prayers," Finn ordered, holding a paper fan.
Antoneth rubbed the back of her head. "You dumb son of a—"
Smack!
Finn's fan hit her hand before she could finish.
"I'm sorry for the sins I have committed," Antoneth muttered, looking down in defeat.
Now, you might be wondering why nobody was stopping them. Well, the advisor was busy talking to some of the top students, and the rest of the class was just chatting amongst themselves.
Meanwhile, Antoneth was crying internally. "Hu hu, you teacher's pet! You said this plan would work, so why did you back out?" she lamented, thinking about the student council president.
"So, a doctor, huh?" Antoneth asked, showing Finn an old picture from ninth grade.
Finn smiled and raised his eyebrows as he took the phone. Looking at the photo, he muttered, "Ahh, I still look the same... black eyes, blonde hair."
While scanning through the pictures, he casually deleted them one by one.
"Yeah, nah, fam, I don't need any reminders of my chuunibyou phase. Even if it's just a little ring."
After erasing seven of them, he realized that only selfies were left, so he handed the phone back.
"Yeah, here. Can't forget those memories," Finn said.
Antoneth only turned off her phone after seeing the home screen. Then, a mischievous smile crept onto her face.
"Hey, can you come over to my place tomorrow? Bring those glasses with only one lens—I need a model for my YouDia, and some people said you look cute in them."
Finn blinked, then grinned. "Guess my looks are special, huh?" he thought.
He nodded. "Yeah, I'll be there. Do we need a specific style?"
Antoneth thought for a moment before replying, "You know what? Let's just shop instead. We'll do it the next day."
"F—" Finn smacked himself with the paper fan.
Antoneth let out a surprised "Eep!" like a startled cat.
"Sorry for I have sinned."
At this moment, Finn was on his motorcycle, his license secured on him, with a goth girl clinging to his back.
"Huh. This doesn't feel hard anymore," he thought, handling the motorcycle with ease. He recalled the first time he drove—let's just say his life flashed before his eyes. Twice. That was the first time he genuinely thought he might die.
Since then, he hadn't had any close encounters with death.
Meanwhile, Antoneth, clinging onto him, was blushing furiously.
"Oh god, oh god, oh god—this is the closest I've been to him in months! Well… if you don't count the time I snuck into his bed."
She subtly sniffed the back of his jacket, smiling goofily.
But just then, Finn noticed something—people were running.
He drove a little further and saw a hunter being killed by two humanoid creatures. They had human bodies, but their heads and legs were those of a horse. The Tikbalangs had just crushed the C-rank hunter's head with a bat when they turned to Finn and Antoneth.
"Neth! Please run away!" Finn shouted.
The Tikbalangs screamed and dashed toward him.
At that moment, Finn saw his past life flash before his eyes again—but this time, there was something new. A memory he had never seen before.
Then, as if by instinct, he created a shadow puppet in the shape of a dog. His shadow expanded, and from within it, two divine dogs emerged—one white, one black, each with markings on their foreheads.
Finn grinned as adrenaline rushed through him. The divine dogs lunged at the Tikbalangs.
"Hey, Neth, hold on tight. We're gonna run," Finn whispered.
He felt the head nod behind him, followed by a quiet "Yes."
Revving the engine, he turned the bike sharply, speeding off in the opposite direction.
After several seconds, he glanced at the side mirror. The divine dogs were still fighting, showing a few bruises but looking strong.
Finn sighed and finally stopped the motorcycle.
"Is it safe now?" Antoneth asked hesitantly.
Finn felt something moist against his back—Antoneth was trembling.
The divine dogs returned, sinking back into Finn's shadow.
Getting off his bike, Finn turned and hugged his best friend, comforting her. As he rubbed her head, she suddenly spoke.
"Will you stay with me?" Antoneth asked, looking up at him.
Finn smiled. "Of course I will. You're my best friend, after all."
Antoneth took a deep breath, gathering her courage.
"Will you—"
A loud truck horn blared as a vehicle sped past them, drowning out her words.
She groaned, slapping her forehead. "Ugh, let me try that again—Finn, will you—"
Another noise—a passing train this time—cut her off.
She clenched her fists, gritting her teeth. Are you kidding me?!
"...What were you saying?" he asked, tilting his head.
Antoneth let out a long sigh before finally giving up. She shook her head and started walking toward the house.
"Never mind. Just take me home, idiot."
Finn shrugged, getting back on his bike. "Alright, alright."
The ride back was quiet. Antoneth stared at the sky, pouting to herself. Damn it. Next time, for sure…
