VALDIS: CHAPTER 67

The darkness around Valdis was suffocating, broken only by the faintest glimmers of starlight above.

She ran blindly, her heart pounding like a war drum, her breaths sharp and ragged as though the air itself was against her.

She didn't know where her feet carried her, only that she had to find them first.

Somewhere ahead, the slave quarters awaited her desperate plan.

The decrepit barn loomed in the distance, its weathered planks barely standing against the weight of centuries. It had one small window at the back and none in the front.

Thick iron chains bound the doors, their dull gleam in the moonlight a cruel mockery of freedom. Six guards circled the barn like vultures, armed and vigilant, their faces blank with indifference.

Valdis crouched in the shadows behind a crumbling house, her mind racing through the enchantments she'd memorized over the years.
