The forest was alive with tension, the air thick with the scent of pine and damp earth. Luna walked beside Kael, her senses on high alert as they moved through the trees. The encounter with the mysterious man had left her shaken, his words echoing in her mind like a warning she couldn't ignore.
"The others… they're not as patient as we are."
Who were the others? And what did they want with her? Luna's fingers brushed against the pendant around her neck, its warmth a small comfort in the face of the unknown.
"We're being followed," Kael said suddenly, his voice low and tense.
Luna's heart skipped a beat. "By who?"
Kael didn't answer. Instead, he stopped and turned, his golden eyes scanning the shadows. Luna followed his gaze, her hands glowing faintly as she called on her magic.
"Show yourself," Kael growled, his voice sharp with warning.
For a moment, there was only silence. Then, a figure stepped out from behind a tree—a woman, tall and lithe, with silver hair that shimmered in the moonlight. Her eyes were a striking shade of violet, and she moved with a grace that was almost otherworldly.
"Relax," the woman said, her voice calm and melodic. "I'm not here to hurt you."
Kael's body tensed, his muscles coiled like a spring ready to snap. "Who are you?"
The woman smiled, though there was no warmth in it. "My name is Lyra. And I've been looking for you, Luna."
Luna's breath caught. "Me? Why?"
Lyra's gaze shifted to her, and for a moment, Luna felt as if the woman could see straight into her soul. "Because you're the Moon Priestess. And if the Bloodfang Pack—or worse, the Shadow Council—gets their hands on you, it won't just be the forest that suffers. It will be the entire world."
Luna's stomach churned at the mention of the Shadow Council. "Who are they?"
Lyra's expression darkened. "A group of ancient, power-hungry beings who have been searching for the Moon Temple for centuries. They believe its power will grant them immortality—and dominion over everything."
Kael's growl was low and menacing. "And what do you want with Luna?"
Lyra's violet eyes flicked to him, her smile returning. "To help her, of course. The Bloodfang Pack and the Shadow Council are not the only ones who know about the temple. There are others—like me—who have been waiting for the Moon Priestess to awaken. And now that she has, it's my duty to ensure she reaches the temple safely."
Luna exchanged a glance with Kael, her mind racing. Could they trust Lyra? She seemed sincere, but there was something about her—something unsettling—that made Luna hesitate.
"Why should we believe you?" Kael demanded, his voice sharp.
Lyra's smile faded, and for a moment, she looked almost sad. "Because I was there the night your parents died, Luna. I tried to save them, but I was too late."
Luna's breath caught, her heart pounding in her chest. "You knew my parents?"
Lyra nodded, her expression softening. "They were good people. Brave and selfless. They gave their lives to protect the temple—and you."
Luna's vision blurred with tears, and she felt Kael's hand on her arm, steadying her. "How do we know you're telling the truth?"
Lyra reached into the folds of her cloak and pulled out a small, silver locket. She opened it, revealing a tiny portrait of a man and woman—Luna's parents.
"This belonged to your mother," Lyra said, her voice gentle. "She gave it to me the night she died, to keep safe until you were ready."
Luna's hands trembled as she took the locket, her fingers brushing against the cool metal. The faces in the portrait were unfamiliar, yet there was something about them—something that made her heart ache with a longing she couldn't explain.
"Luna," Kael said, his voice low and urgent. "We don't know if we can trust her."
Luna looked at him, her mind racing. She didn't know if they could trust Lyra either, but the locket felt like a piece of her past—a piece of herself—that she had been missing for so long.
"I want to hear what she has to say," Luna said, her voice firm despite the fear in her chest.
Kael hesitated, his jaw tight with tension. But then he nodded, his golden eyes filled with concern. "All right. But if she tries anything…"
"I won't," Lyra said, her voice calm but firm. "I'm here to help. And if we're going to reach the temple before the Bloodfang Pack or the Shadow Council, we need to move quickly."
Luna nodded, her resolve strengthening. She didn't know what lay ahead, but one thing was certain: she couldn't do this alone.
