Shadows in the Crowd

Daniel barely heard the final whistle. CF Igualada had won, but his mind was elsewhere.

The world had frozen. Someone had spoken to him. And worst of all… the leader of the organization was alive.Sofia ran up to him as the team gathered near the sidelines. "Dani! Are you okay? You looked… weird out there."Daniel forced a shaky breath. "I—yeah. Just tired."Sofia narrowed her eyes, clearly not convinced. But before she could say anything, the coach clapped his hands."Listen up, team! We did well today, but the tournament isn't over. We've got an even tougher match coming up against Sant Andreu. If you want to stay in this tournament, I expect full focus in training."Daniel barely reacted. His pulse was still racing. He needed to talk to someone—but who?The next morning, Daniel sat in science class, his knee bouncing under the desk. The teacher spoke in Catalan, but Daniel wasn't even trying to understand. His thoughts kept circling back to the man who had spoken to him on the field."Someone who should be dead."Daniel swallowed hard. Was he losing his mind? Or was this proof that the danger wasn't over?Beside him, Sofia nudged his arm. "Seriously, what's up with you?" she whispered.Daniel hesitated. Then, before he could stop himself, he muttered, "I saw someone yesterday. Someone who shouldn't be alive."Sofia's face paled. "Who?"Daniel opened his mouth—but then the teacher called on him."Daniel Carter, ¿puedes responder la pregunta?" "Can you answer the question?"Daniel froze. The class was staring. The teacher had asked something. He had no idea what."Uh…" Daniel glanced at Sofia for help. She sighed and whispered, "El sistema nervioso." "The nervous system."Daniel turned back to the teacher. "El sistema nervioso."The teacher nodded and moved on.Sofia smirked. "You really need to start learning Spanish."Daniel exhaled, rubbing his face. Yeah, like that's my biggest problem right now…That evening, Daniel arrived at training, still distracted. Sant Andreu was a strong team, and he couldn't afford to mess up.The coach ran them through drills, but Daniel felt slow—his reactions off.Miguel noticed. "Carter, wake up, tío. You playing or sleepwalking?""I'm fine," Daniel muttered.Miguel shrugged. "Better be. If you keep playing like this, you're gonna end up on the bench."Daniel clenched his jaw. He couldn't afford to lose focus. The coach blew the whistle. "Carter! Get in the practice match. Show me you still belong in the starting lineup."Daniel nodded and stepped onto the field. Time to prove himself. The game started fast. Erik sent him a pass, but before Daniel could react, his vision blurred again. For a split second, the world slowed down—but this time, something was wrong.A shadow moved at the edge of the field. Watching.Daniel's heart pounded. He turned sharply—and lost control of the ball.Miguel stole it and scored. The whistle blew. "Carter, focus!" the coach barked.Daniel inhaled sharply. The shadow was gone. But he knew one thing for sure.Someone was watching him.
