The Key to the Past

Evelyn's breath caught in her throat. Rosaline's words echoed in the silent corridor, sending a shiver down her spine. She had spent every moment since her arrival searching for answers—now, they had found her.

Theo's posture remained rigid, his expression an unreadable mask. "Careful with your words, Lady Rosaline." His voice was low, edged with warning.

Rosaline lifted her chin, undeterred. "You think I don't see the way Lord Davenport watches her? The way you try to protect her?" She shifted her gaze to Evelyn. "You're not from here, are you?"

Evelyn's heart pounded, but she forced herself to remain calm. "What do you mean?"

Rosaline stepped closer. "You don't belong to this time."

A cold rush of fear prickled Evelyn's skin. She cast a quick glance at Theo, but he remained silent, letting her decide how to respond.

"How do you know that?" Evelyn asked cautiously.

Rosaline hesitated, then glanced around as if making sure no one else could hear. "Because I've seen it before."

Theo stiffened. "Explain."

Rosaline swallowed, wringing her hands together. "My mother… she used to tell me stories. Stories of people who arrived from nowhere, speaking of things beyond this world. They were always hunted, always forced to disappear." She looked at Evelyn, her voice trembling slightly. "If Lord Davenport suspects you, you're in grave danger."

Evelyn's breath quickened. "Then I need to know everything. Who else has come here? And how did they leave?"

Rosaline bit her lip, as if debating whether to speak further. Finally, she whispered, "Meet me in the east wing conservatory at midnight. I'll tell you everything I know."

Theo stepped between them. "This could be a trap."

Rosaline's eyes flared with defiance. "If I wanted to harm her, I would have told Davenport already."

A long silence stretched between them before Theo gave a sharp nod. "Midnight. Don't be late."

Rosaline cast one last look at Evelyn before disappearing down the hall, her emerald gown vanishing into the shadows.

Evelyn turned to Theo, her pulse racing. "Do you trust her?"

Theo exhaled slowly. "No. But she may be our only lead."

The weight of the unknown pressed down on Evelyn, but one thing was certain—tonight, she would take her first step toward unraveling the mystery of her past… and her fate.
