Chapter 8: The Shadow’s Edge

Zhang Yan awoke to the sound of soft footsteps outside the cave. Not the heavy steps of beasts—but the careful, deliberate movements of a killer.

He tensed. Someone was hunting them.

Shi Lihua stirred beside him, her breath shallow. She had heard it too.

Then, the torches went out.

Darkness swallowed the cave.

A whisper of air, then—a blade slashed toward Zhang Yan's throat.

He barely dodged, rolling to the side. The cold bite of steel grazed his cheek as he sprang to his feet, dagger in hand. The cave walls felt tighter, the air thick with the scent of damp stone and sweat.

The assassin struck again, faster this time. Zhang Yan parried, the force of the clash reverberating up his arm. Sparks burst as steel met steel, illuminating the briefest glimpse of his opponent's masked face.

Shi Lihua moved like a phantom, her needle-dagger flashing toward the attacker's ribs. He twisted, narrowly avoiding the strike, his footwork precise—too precise. This wasn't just a disciple seeking to eliminate rivals. This was an execution.

Zhang Yan adjusted his stance. He watched the assassin's movements, reading the feints, the shifts in weight. The next attack came, a flurry of slashes aimed to overwhelm him. He deflected one, dodged another, then stepped inside the assassin's reach. His dagger flicked out—

A gasp.

The figure staggered back, clutching a wound in his side. The mask slipped, revealing sharp eyes and bloodied teeth. Wei Tian.

A smirk played across Wei Tian's lips despite the pain. "Clever bastard… but you won't live past tomorrow."

Then, with a practiced roll, he melted into the shadows. The rustling of leaves outside signaled his retreat, leaving behind only the cold promise of death.

Zhang Yan exhaled; muscles still coiled like a drawn bow. "He'll come back."

Shi Lihua wiped her blade clean against her sleeve, her gaze hard. "We'll be ready."

Outside, the forest pulsed with danger. But within Zhang Yan, a new fire burned.

If they wanted him dead, they would have to try harder.
