Sugar and honey

"Sorry I um...I froze up, I've never even heard the sound of guns before today."

"What happened to fighting for humanity?" Perhaps my words are a little bit harsh here, but he does seem suspicious for showing up late, he could be who I'm looking for.

"Sorry captain, I'll do better next time."

Yeah I was definitely too harsh, I myself was a bit shocked hearing the sounds of gunshots, but since I have minimal fear of death, I was able to pull myself together and fight alongside Four.

"You say this is your first time hearing gunshots?"

"Yes, sir."

"Hasn't there been three ambushes in a row before today already?"

"I didn't volunteer in any of those expedition...b-but I will volunteer more often starting today, for humanity."

How noble of you. He didn't seem very suspicious, his facial expressions screams trepidation and guilt.

"I respect that." I thought I'd say something reassuring after his passionate declaration of fighting for humanity.

Four has fought like hell next to me, Nine and his subordinate were trapped by the Clubs soldier in an alleyway, these are what I saw and know with absolute certainty, making them less of a suspect for Clubs spy in my mind.

Although Two was ultimately the deciding factor that forced the retreat of Clubs soldier, she didn't kill any of them.

She could just be feigning bravery when she was walking out guns blazing without cover. There's a chance that in reality, she knows they won't shoot her in the first place.

Still doesn't make sense, this fight didn't do Clubs any good if that's the case, they didn't walk away with anything of ours.

"You found anything?" I asked upon noticing my subordinate's dufflebag seems to be holding something.

"Oh I was lucky, a few bags of sugar and a bottle of honey, it seems I raided a bakery, great luck today."

Sugar and honey, both are food that can last forever being stored, not that great as a food source but considering the situation, he found gold.

"Looks heavy, let me help you out a little bit."

"Oh it's not much, you don't have t..."

"I want to." I left my dufflebag back there though, it has always been a bad habit of mine, I'm very forgetful of my own possessions.

"Nine, can I borrow your duffelbag? I left mine back there." I turned to Nine who was nearby.

"Yeah sure." Nine passes his duffelbag to me.

"Thanks, it's really not heavy though."

"I want to." I said as I move some of his supplies into Nine's dufflebag so I can help carry it.

It might be a wild assumption, but if we, the ones with poker cards that's not Jack, Queen or King takes turn leading expeditions, it's natural to follow the order of our numbers right? First day lead by Ace, second by Two, third by me, so on and so forth and repeats after Ten.

This logic is somewhat supported, there's been three consecutive expeditions that encountered an ambush, four including today. Assuming my subordinate is telling the truth, which he must be, since it's something he can't fool his own leader about, my group, Three has not went on an expedition the last three days.

Nine has, Two has, Ace was yesterday as mentioned by Two earlier, I think I can assume the four consecutive ambushes happened to Nine, Ten, Ace and then Two, next expedition will be my turn to lead, which is tomorrow.

Of course I can't be certain of this, it's just a hypothesis, but based on current facts I've collected, it's credible.

"Four." I called out to him while tapping on his right shoulder.

"Yeah?"

"You've been volunteering often?" It was safe to ask this, I remember one of the first thing he said to me before the expedition was "it even got you volunteering", which indirectly indicates that I don't usually volunteer myself, thus wouldn't know if he volunteered the last few expeditions unless he told me about it.

And if he did tell me about it, I have the excuse of forgetting about it. It's more convincing for someone to forget about a conversation than a massive gunfight.

"No I never volunteered before today, Two is a friend of mine, and the recent ambushes concerned me. What brought you to volunteer?"

"Just wanted to see what the situation is like currently, the ambushes I meant, to prepare for my own expedition."

"Ah true, yours is tomorrow after all, it's good to understand the situation first."

So my hypothesis was correct, leader of expedition for every day follows the sequence of the numbers on our cards, thus the expedition tomorrow is lead by me, the expedition overmorrow is Four's, and the expedition where the ambushes initially occurred was during Nine's expedition.

"Has Nine been volunteering often?"

"Every single one since he got ambushed as I've heard, wish I have that kind of courage."

"Has Two been volunteering often?"

"I don't know about that, why are you asking all these questions?"

I think I've already gotten my answer. I pulled out the revolver, aimed it at Nine's subordinate's head and pulled the trigger without hesitation.
