The safehouse felt colder, heavier. Astrid's warning hung in the air, an unspoken weight pressing down on them. Selene stood by the window, her arms crossed, trying to make sense of it all.
Vale had a plan.
He wanted her to choose between her life and Lucian's.
It was a trap—one that they couldn't walk into unprepared.
Lucian sat on the edge of a broken table, his silver eyes fixed on Astrid. "If Vale is coming, when?"
Astrid hesitated. "Soon. Days, maybe hours."
Darius cursed under his breath. "Then we're out of time."
Lucian's jaw clenched. "Then we fight."
Selene turned to him. "No."
Lucian's gaze snapped to her, his expression unreadable. "No?"
Selene took a step closer. "If Vale wants us to fight, then we can't just charge in blindly. We need a plan."
Darius nodded. "For once, I agree with her."
Astrid sighed. "And what? Run? Hide?"
Selene exhaled. "No. We make Vale believe we're playing his game. And then—we break it."
Lucian's lips curled into a smirk. "Now that, I like."
A Moment Before the Storm
The night settled around them. The fire had burned down to embers, casting faint flickers of gold against the cabin walls.
Selene couldn't sleep.
She felt Lucian before she saw him. He stood near the door, arms crossed, staring into the dark woods beyond. His presence was steady, comforting, yet filled with an unspoken storm.
She stepped beside him. "You're thinking too much."
Lucian huffed a quiet laugh. "Hard not to, considering we might be dead soon."
Selene frowned. "Don't say that."
Lucian turned to her, silver eyes softening. "Selene… If Vale makes you choose—"
"I won't."
Lucian hesitated. "But if you—"
"I won't." She met his gaze, fierce and unyielding. "I will never choose between us, Lucian."
Lucian searched her face, his jaw tightening. "You don't know what he's capable of."
"I don't care."
Lucian let out a breath, his fingers brushing against hers. "I don't want to lose you."
Selene closed the distance between them. "You won't."
Lucian exhaled sharply, then, as if something inside him snapped, he pulled her into his arms.
Their lips met, but this time, it wasn't just desperation. It was a promise. A vow that neither of them would break.
Selene held onto him as if the world was slipping away. And maybe it was.
But right now, in this moment, she had him.
And that was enough.
For now.
Vale's Move
The night didn't last long.
They woke to the sound of footsteps—many, too many—outside the cabin.
Darius was the first on his feet, sword already in hand. "They found us."
Lucian growled. "Astrid?"
She paled. "I didn't lead them here. I swear."
Selene's pulse thundered. The moment they stepped outside, she felt him.
Vale.
He stood at the edge of the clearing, cloaked in black, his golden eyes glinting like a predator in the dark.
Behind him, dozens of the Order's warriors stood waiting.
Vale smiled. "It's time, Selene."
Selene tightened her grip on Lucian's hand.
No.
She wouldn't let him win.
Not now.
Not ever.
