Chapter Two The Duke’s Brewing Curiosity

When Ballon had begun talking about personal and seemingly trivial matters, Alphonse hadn't been interested.

He wasn't someone who cared much about food or drink. No matter how mysterious or unique a drink was, it wasn't important to him. So he quickly forgot about it and returned to focusing on his work.

Only after he had finished his tasks for the day did he reflect on what Ballon had said.

Alphonse trusted Ballon as a knight. For someone as exacting as Alphonse to have hired Ballon as the commander of the knights rather than any other position required a thorough professional trust.

He had known Ballon for a long time. So, Alphonse knew that Ballon wasn't the type of person to mention personal stories without reason.

Besides, Alphonse was curious.

'After 13 months, she finally asked for something.'

Alphonse still remembered the look in Chloe's eyes when she spoke to him for the first time.

For the past 13 months, they had largely ignored each other outside of their conjugal duties and formal etiquette. Sometimes, due to unavoidable circumstances, when Chloe looked at him, her eyes weren't that clear.

Alphonse knew she was afraid of him. She couldn't maintain eye contact and would flinch and tremble whenever their eyes met. Alphonse was like a wild beast to her, his gaze and words as intimidating as bared fangs.

But he didn't care. In fact, it was more convenient that way. At least they wouldn't bother each other.

'But recently…'

She had changed.

Chloe no longer avoided his gaze. Whenever they exchanged polite greetings, she didn't falter or speak with a shaky voice. She looked at him with bright, clear eyes.

She treated him calmly, with confidence in her tone.

Hadn't she even approached him first and asked for something just a few days ago?

It was truly a sudden change. It was as if his wife had become someone else.

Even if you're not typically interested in other people, certain things have a way of piquing your curiosity.

Why is that? Is it because of the tea that Chloe loves so much? Is it captivating enough to overcome your reluctance and ask about it?

Alphonse Vattenberg, known for his disinterest in others, found himself slightly curious about his wife, Chloe Vattenberg, and her tea.

••🍂••

Park Ha-Jeong had never refused a request to make tea. There weren't many people around her who enjoyed tea even in her original world, so whenever someone showed even a little interest, it made her genuinely happy.

Even in this entirely different world, it was the same. However...

"I'm really sorry, but I promised to make tea for Kiehl..."

"Oh! Oh my! I just remembered something urgent!"

Kiehl suddenly slapped his forehead as if something had occurred to him.

"Really?" Chloe asked in confusion.

"Absolutely. It's a pity though. I was hoping to taste your tea, Madam. Perhaps next time!"

With that, Kiehl bowed deeply to the Duke and Duchess and quickly disappeared, moving like the wind.

Alphonse observed this and thought that Kiehl had a sharp sense of timing.

In the end, only Chloe and Alphonse were left in the drawing room.

Chloe suddenly felt awkward. After all, the person in front of her was her husband— a cold and distant one, from a loveless marriage.

They only met during dinner, and even then, their conversations were limited to polite greetings and business-related topics.

As this realization dawned on her, the awkwardness grew. Chloe shook her head, trying to dispel the feeling.

"Um... what kind of tea do you like?"

Alphonse glanced at the tea containers that Chloe and Kiehl had brought.

He had never tasted any kind of tea before. After all, tea was something barbarians drank, water made from dried plants.

So, he simply asked what she preferred.

"Whatever you choose my wife."

Chloe internally winced.

The worst answer to the question, "What should we eat?" is not an expensive dish or a polarizing choice but rather "Anything."

Naturally, Chloe had no idea what Alphonse's tastes or preferences were. How could she when they had never had a private conversation?

But she couldn't let her discomfort show. Alphonse's gaze was still intimidating.

"Ah... Yes, please wait a moment."

Chloe looked at the tea containers she had brought down and deliberated. What kind of tea should she offer? Which tea would suit her husband's taste?

Her worries about their relationship momentarily vanished. Now, she was just a tea enthusiast wanting to share her favorite drink with someone else.

After much thought, Chloe made her choice and selected a tea.

She took it to the kitchen. After steeping the leaves just right, she returned with a teapot, two cups, and a strainer on a tray.

"Enjoy." Chloe said as she poured the tea through the strainer.

Alphonse looked into the teacup. The deep red tea contrasted beautifully against the white porcelain. Light steam rose from the cup, carrying a unique, dry aroma.

'Is this what she enjoys so much?' Alphonse wondered as he picked up the teacup. He finally took a sip.

Chloe watched nervously, feeling like a contestant awaiting the judges' scores. Alphonse would soon deliver his verdict. What would my score be...?

The tea Chloe had chosen was strong, moderately full-bodied, and not sweet. It was an unflavored blended black tea— robust, mature, and appealing to many.

'I hope he likes it.' Chloe thought as she observed Alphonse's serious expression.

After taking the first sip, Alphonse drank two more without changing his expression.

It was a completely new taste and aroma to him. The malt-like flavor lingered on his palate, smooth and slightly weighty, wrapping around his tongue like silk.

Contrary to his prejudice that tea was a barbaric drink, this scent was neither light nor vulgar.

Alphonse finished his cup without a word. Chloe grew increasingly anxious.

"It was a good drink." He finally said, setting down the empty cup and standing up. He reached for his newspaper.

Chloe, who had also risen, was startled.

"Are you leaving?" She asked, feeling slightly embarrassed. Did he not like it? She had tried her best to choose something suitable.

Alphonse stood up, collected his newspaper, and politely bade her farewell. Chloe followed suit and bowed her head.

As he left, he paused and said; "Next time, could I have tea again?"

"Oh..."

A smile spread across Chloe's face like a blooming flower. She smiled brightly and answered; "Yes, of course."

Chloe didn't notice that Alphonse glanced back at her for a brief moment before closing the drawing room door.

When Chloe returned to her bedroom after finishing the tea, a maid approached her.

"A letter has arrived, Madam."

"A letter? For me?"

Chloe tilted her head as she accepted it.

Entering her room, she opened the letter to find an invitation. The Marchioness Belladonna was hosting a tea party.

"Oh, I see."

As a duchess, Chloe knew she needed to be active in society. With that in mind, she lay on her bed, examining the invitation.

She tried to recall who Marchioness Belladonna was but found no clear memory. After ruining her first tea party following her marriage, Chloe had withdrawn from social circles. To her, Marchioness Belladonna was practically a stranger.

There was no reason to refuse the invitation. Moreover, as the wife of a nobleman, it was her duty to elevate the family's prestige through social activities— something the previous Chloe would have neglected.

Chloe easily decided to attend the tea party. Her plan was to observe the social scene, meet new people, and enjoy some delicious treats.

••🍂••

"I heard that Lady Vattenberg is fond of tea?"

On the day of the tea party, at Marchioness Belladonna's estate. From what Chloe had heard, the Belladonna Family was the largest sponsor of the empire's sole coffee importer.

Perhaps that was why coffee was also served as a beverage at the tea party. Nearby, a young man who appeared to be an employee was busy making hand-drip coffee.

Chloe, attending the party, had planned to sit quietly. It was her first time in the social world, and she had no idea what kind of people the other nobles were.

This time, she intended to quietly attend, enjoy some snacks, and observe the atmosphere.

"Oh my, tea?"

Countess Siena, who had been sticking close to Marchioness Belladonna like a maid— or perhaps she was a close friend— suddenly reacted.

"Are you really talking about water made from dried plants that barbarian countries drink? That's ridiculous, Lady Vattenberg! Are you truly interested in water made from dried plants?"

Lady Siena made such a fuss that her voice could be heard at the far end of the table. The women nearby giggled.

How did news of my interest in tea spread to the social world? Chloe wondered. It was probably through the merchant who imported her tea. It wasn't common to import that much tea at once.

Lady Siena seemed to realize her faux pas too late.

She looked around, covering her mouth with her hand, and laughed.

"Oh my, I'm sorry. Ho-ho-ho. It's just so surprising. In the County of Siena, we don't drink water made from dried plants."

'So does that mean coffee beans are animals and not plants?' Chloe thought, slightly offended by Lady Siena's obvious jab.

Lady Siena's words seemed to embolden Lady Belladonna.

"I once received some black tea as a gift from my uncle, Viscount Raphael, and it was so bitter and astringent. It seems Lady Vattenberg has quite a unique taste."

The Marchioness smiled smugly, continuing, "Really, it's nothing like the deep bitterness of coffee."

'They're so smug.' Chloe thought as she watched them bask in their perceived victory. She then spoke up.

"Well, I wonder where your uncle first encountered black tea. Black tea isn't a bitter or astringent drink at all."

"What? What do you mean?"

Marchioness Belladonna's voice grew louder, clearly not expecting such a response.

"Have you ever tried black tea, Madame Vattenberg? The tea I had was definitely bitter. My uncle said that black tea is supposed to taste that way."

Then, perhaps hastily, Lady Belladonna added, as if she didn't want her uncle to be mistaken for someone who drinks 'bitter and astringent water made from dried leaves.'

"Well, ever since then, my uncle hasn't touched black tea at all. It seems he didn't find it appealing."

"Whether it's made from dried leaves or roasted beans, it's natural to find it unappealing if the drink tastes bitter and astringent. I believe you need to learn how to brew black tea properly, my lady."

Chloe stirred her coffee and continued.

"If black tea tastes bitter and astringent, it's a sign that it was brewed incorrectly."

"My uncle brewed the tea wrong?" Lady Belladonna's voice was full of embarrassment and her cheeks were flushed red. "Surely, Lady Vattenberg, you're not trying to insult my flesh and blood?!"

Chloe was shocked by Lady Belladonna's sensitive reaction.

After all, pointing out that tea was brewed incorrectly hardly seemed like an insult. She responded with a calm expression.

"No, I am not, so please calm down. Tannin, the component that gives black tea its bitter and astringent taste, doesn't come out when tea leaves are brewed properly."

The tea party, which had been filled with intermittent giggles and murmurs, fell silent. Chloe seized the moment and continued in a composed voice.

"Tannin is released only when the tea leaves are steeped for too long or overly stimulated, such as by squeezing them. Well-brewed black tea is very smooth and fragrant, with no bitterness at all."

There was a moment of silence. No one laughed or chatted. It seemed like everyone was looking at the hostess, Lady Belladonna.

And Lady Belladonna herself... was standing there trembling, her eyes wide, as if she had been severely insulted. To anyone watching, it looked as if Chloe had delivered a verbal uppercut.

Lady Sienna, noticing Belladonna's reaction, glanced around. She was the one who broke the silence at the table.

"To us, the specifics of brewing tea aren't that important. Whoever enjoys it may simply continue to enjoy it. Isn't that right, Lady Belladonna?"

Her words were clearly meant to be comforting. Lady Belladonna, slightly calmer, regained her original sassy demeanor.

"Yes, that's right, Lady Sienna. What does it matter to someone who doesn't even drink tea?" She said this while blatantly glancing in Chloe's direction. Chloe took another sip of coffee without saying a word.

At the moment when the two ladies were silently asserting their victory, another lady greeted Chloe.

"By the way, Lady Vattenberg, it's really nice to see you after such a long time."

"...I feel the same, Lady Horton."

"Lady Vattenberg, you had a difficult time hosting a tea party before, didn't you? Has it only been a year since then?"

Baroness Horton covered her mouth with her gloved hand, laughed, and continued.

"I was concerned when you seemed to withdraw from society after that, but I'm very happy to see you again."

Chloe understood Lady Horton's intentions.

Chloe had indeed botched the first tea party she hosted after becoming a duchess a year ago, leaving her embarrassed and retreating from social circles.

She had hidden herself away. There was no way the events of that time would be a pleasant topic for Chloe.

Lady Horton surely knew that.

'It seems Chloe is seen as easy prey in the social world as well.'

But the Chloe now was not the same as the Chloe from before, so it didn't matter.

Chloe realized that the ladies around her were listening intently to her conversation with Lady Horton. They were certainly expecting the formerly weak Chloe to cry or react with shock. But Chloe had no intention of doing that.

Chloe smiled naturally, not exaggeratedly.

"Yes, that's right."

A look of confusion crossed Mrs. Horton's face. The old Chloe would have already cried or run away, her face bright red.

"I… Lady Vattenberg, are you really okay? I felt so bad that you were embarrassed and even cried."

"Yes, that's how it was then, but it's all right now. It was a long time ago. But…"

Chloe laughed lightly.

"You almost sound like you wish I wasn't okay."

Lady Horton felt the atmosphere suddenly turn cold.

The woman in front of her was smiling, but only she could see that Chloe's eyes were cold. She also detected the coldness in her deceptively light laughter.

The Chloe she knew would never act like this. Chloe Vattenberg was always cautious, always on guard.

A woman who displayed a pathetic level of meekness that was unbefitting of her husband's status, and who could do nothing but cry in the face of envy and malice from society.

Was this really the same Chloe Vattenberg she had known?

In that brief moment, Lady Horton remembered that the person in front of her was the Duchess. In their society, a woman's status was determined by her husband's rank. Until now, Chloe had no idea how to leverage the fortunate position that had fallen into her lap.

But Chloe was different now, Lady Horton realized. And if the day came when Chloe fully took advantage of her position...

Lady Horton, suddenly startled as if she had been burned, raised her hands defensively.

"Oh, no! That's not what I meant! I must not be good with words, and I spoke out of turn. I'm truly sorry, Lady Vattenberg."

All the ladies who had been listening were surprised by Lady Horton's sudden change in attitude. However, Chloe, the one facing her, didn't seem to pay it much mind.

"Oh, no. I still have much to learn, and I often end up saying and doing things that may seem rude. I understand, Lady Horton." Chloe said with a smile. But Lady Horton understood the hidden message behind those humble words: 'You were rude'. Her back was suddenly damp with cold sweat.

When the invisible battle between Chloe and Lady Horton ended with Lady Horton's declaration of surrender, the atmosphere at the tea party became much calmer. A quick-witted lady among the guests shifted the topic.

"…By the way, have you all read this week's issue of The Queen's Digest? It's about the new trend of bustle dresses with pleated sleeves…"

The conversation quickly moved in a more peaceful direction, and no one attempted to challenge Chloe again.

Chloe returned to the Duke's residence after successfully completing her original purpose of 'observing the social scene and enjoying some good food'.

••🍂••

"Did you enjoy the tea party?" A deep voice interrupted Chloe as she was cutting into her dinner of tender steak.

Chloe looked up at her husband, who was seated across from her. Alphonse's handsome face was as emotionless as ever.

Again, just a matter of courtesy. As usual, Chloe responded with a polite smile.

"Of course. It was quite enjoyable."

"I'm glad to hear that."

The conversation during dinner went no further.

After the meal, Chloe was about to bid Alphonse goodnight and retire to her bedroom, per usual, when Alphonse spoke.

"Duchess, may I have a moment?"

His voice was indifferent but polite.

"Hm? Of course." Chloe replied, blinking her large eyes in slight confusion.

"I would like to have some tea. Would you mind?"

Upon hearing those words, Chloe's face lit up as if a switch had been flipped. Sharing tea with others was one of her greatest joys.

"Of course!"

This time, Chloe wanted to let Alphonse choose his own tea. She went to the tearoom, selected several small samples, and returned to the parlor a few minutes later.

"What are these?"

Alphonse sounded curious. Chloe didn't realize it, but this was the first time Alphonse had shown interest in anything she did since their marriage.

"It's a tea sampler. Now, try it."

Chloe smiled as she handed him the long tray. It contained small samples of various tea leaves with different characteristics. The idea was for the drinker to smell the tea leaves and choose the one they liked.

Alphonse picked up the tins one by one, examined them, and quickly made his choice.

"It's Lapsang Souchong! I suppose you enjoy the smoky aroma." Chloe said happily.

Lapsang Souchong was the name used in the region where she lived when she was Park Ha-Jeong. According to the label on the tea canister, the name here was different. Naturally, the geography and production areas were different as well.

"It has a similar scent to cigars. You do enjoy cigars, don't you?"

Chloe playfully imitated Alphonse smoking a cigar, exhaling air as if blowing smoke, and laughed through her slightly disheveled bangs.

Alphonse looked at her with an unreadable expression and said,

"Duchess."

"Yes?"

"That was very unladylike."

"Ah… yes, of course." Chloe replied, a bit sulkily.

After a while, Chloe returned with a pot full of Lapsang Souchong.

But this time, she didn't just bring tea. She came holding a tray with the teapot as well as a small plate.

And on that plate was...

"Is that ham?"

"Yes, that's right." Chloe answered with a proud smile.

Alphonse recognized it immediately. It was often served as a snack when he drank wine. If it weren't for the unique aroma coming from the teapot, he might have wondered if Chloe had brought alcohol instead.

She strained the tea through a strainer and handed the cup to Alphonse.

"Bon appétit."

Alphonse looked down at his teacup. The tea didn't look much different from the one he drank last time, but the aroma had a unique, slightly spicy scent. He brought the cup to his lips.

The taste in his mouth...

"It's like bacon, isn't it?"

Chloe's unexpected question made Alphonse pause and lift the cup from his mouth. "What?"

"When I drink Lapsang Souchong, I always think it tastes like bacon. Bacon is made by smoking pork, and Lapsang Souchong is made by smoking tea leaves."

Chloe tapped her teacup with her index finger.

"Bacon-flavored tea—it's really interesting, isn't it?"

"Is that so?"

Alphonse took a few more sips. Perhaps because he had chosen it himself, the strong, smoky flavor suited his taste quite well. But it left him with an odd feeling.

Could it be that something was missing? For Alphonse Vattenberg, food wasn't something he particularly enjoyed. To him, food was meant to prolong life or entertain guests—nothing more.

But now, for some reason, he felt a strong pull... a strange desire for something more.

"Doesn't it feel like you're missing something? Here, try this."

Chloe placed the plate of ham in front of Alphonse.

He picked up a piece and put it in his mouth. The savory saltiness and juice from the ham burst as he chewed, and the delicious taste of the fat lingered. He realized this was exactly what he needed.

"It pairs well, doesn't it?" Chloe said happily. "It's unusual for snacks to go so well with tea but Lapsang Souchong goes well with all kinds of meats— salty ham, ham-filled sandwiches, sausages…"

Chloe's face lit up with joy as she imagined the delicious combinations.

"Personally, it reminds me of dumplings."

"Dumplings? Aren't those from On?"

"Yes, that's right. Lapsang Souchong is also a tea that originated in On."

On was a large monarchy in the eastern part of the world. Chloe, who had studied tea in this world, knew that the origins of tea were in On.

"Do you like On's cuisine?"

"Of course! I really, really like it." Chloe covered her mouth with the back of her hand and laughed. Alphonse drank his tea in silence.

It didn't take long for them to finish the entire teapot. And of course, they ate all the ham too. He was surprised at how well he ate and drink, considering it was right after dinner.

As before, Alphonse didn't express whether he liked or disliked the tea. Instead, he opened his mouth to make a suggestion.

"If you don't mind…"

"Please come visit me anytime, Duke." Alphonse was momentarily surprised. Chloe had anticipated what he was going to say and had already responded.

"I love drinking tea with someone more than anything in the world." Chloe said with a bright smile.

••🍂••

From then on, having tea after dinner became a habit for them. Considering that before this, the only time they spent together was during dinner, it was a significant improvement.

Alphonse was not a leisurely man. By his standards, he never spent more time on useless things than it took to smoke a cigar. Chloe didn't know it, but the fact that he took the time every evening for tea meant that he truly enjoyed it.

Clearly, tea culture had a unique charm. There wasn't a day when he wasn't busy. He always pushed himself to stay occupied because he didn't like anything. Because, when he had free time, instead of feeling comfort, he felt emptiness. At least when he was busy, he didn't feel that emptiness.

But tea time was different. When he drank tea while listening to Chloe's excited chatter, he didn't feel busy, nor did he feel empty.

Even Alphonse himself couldn't explain why. Was it because of the delicious scent that wafted from the tea, or the warmth that filled his stomach, or was it something else?

Regardless, that time had the power to give him the only kind of rest he knew.

Of course, Alphonse didn't like tea as much as Chloe did. Now, he was just beginning to drink one cup at a time.

'But at least I understand why you find pleasure in this.' Alphonse mused as he looked at Chloe, who seemed to genuinely love tea.

Meanwhile, the rumor that the Duke and Duchess had tea time every day spread among all the residents of the Vattenberg estate.

"The Duke drinks tea with his wife every day?" A servant who was carrying luggage shouted loudly. "That doesn't make sense! You must have seen it wrong."

"I can't have seen it wrong, you idiot. It didn't just happen once or twice."

"But those two have never been close. It's been thirteen months!" The kitchen maid, who was washing dishes, joined the conversation. "Thirteen months! The Duke treated her coldly for thirteen months. He looked at her as if she were a stranger."

"Maybe they suddenly became friends."

"Do you think that's possible?"

"Madam was very timid and foolish. There's no way the Duke would suddenly become interested in her."

"The knights say that Madam has changed."

"What are you all talking about?"

At that moment, all the servants and maids turned their attention in one direction. The person they saw had them shivering under her harsh glare.

"Head Maid!"

The employees were shocked. They quickly checked their clothes and looked at her with nervous expressions, like children caught doing something wrong.

"Well, we didn't mean any harm…"

They were especially nervous in front of Lady Colin because she was the head maid. Strictly speaking, the maids and servants were separate from her jurisdiction, but the influence of the title "Head Maid" could not be ignored.

The Head Maid, typically a low-ranking noble, stayed by the side of a high-ranking noblewoman, assisting and caring for her. Because of her position, she was closest to the mistress of Vattenberg. As the highest-ranking maid, she was far above the commoner maids and servants.

The servants and maids were always on edge around Lady Colin, who often mocked their mistress.

Colin looked around sharply at those who had been gossiping about Chloe. But what came out of her mouth was completely unexpected.

"Who said that Madam has changed? Listen carefully. People don't change that easily. Especially not someone like Madam Vattenberg."

"Head Maid..."

The workers, caught off guard, exchanged bewildered glances. Lady Colin continued in a sharp tone.

"Listen carefully. The Duke of Vattenberg is only acting on a whim. He feels sorry for her and is just showing sympathy. The two will soon return to their normal relationship, so there's no need to worry about it. So…"

'Don't speak favorably of Chloe,' she seemed to imply.

The maid swallowed nervously. For some reason, it felt as if Lady Colin was glaring directly at her.

"It's better to stop talking about how the Madam has changed or what their relationship is like. Do you understand?"

In any case, it was clear that Lady Colin, the head maid who stayed by Chloe's side, knew more about the couple than the employees who cleaned or did the laundry. And of course, no one wanted to go against the head maid's wishes.

For various reasons, the servants kept their mouths shut. They decided to accept her opinion.

The chatter among the maids and servants that day ended there.

Everything was just a whim of the Duke Vattenberg. The Madam had not changed.

After that, there was nothing more to talk about. The workers who had gathered dispersed to do their own tasks, and no one lingered behind.

Meanwhile, Lady Colin, who had also left, gritted her teeth and walked briskly. The sound of her footsteps echoed with an unmistakable anger.

"Chloe has changed? Don't make me laugh."

Lady Colin was born as the second daughter of Count Colin. She had grown up around the same time as Chloe, the eldest daughter of the Grey family, and went through girlhood and adolescence together with her.

Noble boys and girls weren't born with inherent nobility or kindness. Count Colin moved to the capital early on, and as a child, Lady Colin was secretly an outcast among the children of the capital's nobles. It had nothing to do with Lady Colin's efforts or abilities, so she had to learn to endure frustration from an early age.

It was only later, when the Grey family moved to the capital, that her fortunes began to change.

Chloe, with her unusual personality, quickly became the new target for the children of the capital's nobles. As a result, Lady Colleen, who had been ostracized, found herself integrated into their social circle. Colleen mocked Chloe's every move, gossiping about her, and in doing so, naturally blended into the group of capital noble children. It was a kind of last resort and salvation for Lady Colleen.

As she went through this kind of adolescence, she developed an unconscious belief that Chloe was—and should always be—beneath her. Chloe was inferior and less capable. If not, it would be Colleen who would fall again.

This deeply ingrained perception became a compulsion that shaped Colleen's words and actions well into adulthood. Even as Chloe became the Duchess of Battenberg and Colleen's family fortunes declined, Colleen clung to this belief. Now, as Chloe's head lady-in-waiting, Colleen's obsession persisted.

For thirteen months, Lady Colleen faithfully clung to her obsession. Though Chloe was a duchess, she was not loved by the Duke and had no control over the household's budget or personnel. Moreover, her personality was not strong enough to resist even the slightest bullying.

Lady Colleen was satisfied with this situation. Despite Chloe's title, Colleen was always confident that she was superior to Chloe, who she considered pathetic and foolish. The maids feared Colleen more than Chloe, and it was always Colleen who decided how Chloe was treated.

Yes, it had been like that, and it must remain so in the future.

Lady Colleen suddenly ground her teeth. If Chloe didn't fall, then Colleen would be the one to fall. She refused to believe that Chloe had truly changed. No, she was ready to sacrifice anything to keep Chloe from changing.

••🍂••

Chloe was walking down the hallway toward the kitchen with the intention of having some tea when she heard a familiar voice.

"Wow, my goodness. Madam!"

Chloe turned around and a happy smile spread across her face.

"Oh my, Jacob! And Balt and Cain too!"

Chloe ran toward the brightly lit window. Her eyes sparkled with joy when she saw Jacob's face through the window frame, with Balt and Cain peeking in on either side of him.

"It's been so long!"

"That's right, Madam! Wow, you look even more beautiful than before."

Chloe felt a bit embarrassed by Jacob's excessive praise, even though she knew this face wasn't truly hers.

Chloe noticed that all three knights were drenched in sweat. They weren't wearing their usual uniforms but rather comfortable-looking clothes.

"Were you training?"

"Yes, that's right."

"Oh, in this hot weather... Would you like to come in for a moment? Have something cold to drink before you go."

However, to her surprise, the knights hesitated.

"Well, um…"

"We'd love to, Madam, but…"

Chloe was puzzled by their reluctance, especially since she thought they would be pleased with the offer. Finally, Jacob revealed the truth.

"Well, the other day, we got scolded by the captain for drinking tea with you, Madam. He said, 'How dare you sit across from the Duchess?'"

"Oh my, what's wrong with sitting across from me?"

"According to knightly etiquette, a knight should not sit next to the person he serves. He must stand beside them."

Of course, the Knights of Battenberg were meant to serve the members of the Battenberg family, which included Chloe as the Duchess.

Chloe, who had been unaware of this rule, felt genuinely sorry.

"Oh my goodness, I had no idea. I'm so sorry, you got scolded for no reason because of me…"

"No, no! You don't have to apologize!"

"It's not your fault, Madam!"

Cain nodded vigorously next to Jacob and Balt. Chloe nearly laughed out loud at how much it looked like he was headbanging.

Jacob, with a melancholy look in his eyes, sighed. "I'm ready to trust and drink whatever you give me, Madam, but it's really disappointing."

Balt, standing beside him, grumbled. "Ugh, I really want to try it! The tea you brew is amazing, Madam."

Cain nodded in agreement.

Chloe thought for a moment.

"…Well then, as long as you don't sit across from me, it should be fine, right?"

"Huh?"

"Please wait here for a moment."

With that, Chloe quickly ran towards the kitchen, leaving the trio of knights wondering what she was planning.

Chloe returned within a few minutes, carrying three glass bottles in her arms. Although she was out of breath from the short run, she caught her breath and spoke as she handed each knight a bottle.

"Actually, I made this for myself, but I'll give it to you instead. There's nothing better than a cold drink in the summer."

"Madam, you're too kind…"

"I can always make more. I have plenty of tea leaves." Chloe said brightly.

The trio of knights, who had taken the bottles without hesitation, looked at them curiously. Each bottle was about 500ml, but without any markings or labels, it was difficult to tell what was inside.

"What is it?" Balt asked.

"It's flavored oolong tea. Oolong tea is partially oxidized, so it's somewhere between black tea and green tea," Chloe explained happily. "I really like oolong tea because it's smooth, nutty, and refreshing, with the benefits of both green and black tea. Plus, this one is flavored... oh my!"

Chloe's explanation was cut off by Balt, unable to resist, had already opened the lid and taken a sip.

"Hey! Show some manners in front of the Madam!" Jacob scolded, but Balt didn't listen. He had already drunk half the bottle and was wide-eyed.

"Ugh!"

"What's wrong?" Jacob asked.

"It's smooth… and fragrant. Plus… it has a fruity aroma."

Jacob, unable to contain his curiosity, also opened his bottle and took a sip. Cain quickly followed suit.

"Wow! It's delicious. Fragrant, with a subtle nutty flavor… Oh!" As Jacob took a few more sips, he turned to Chloe with wide eyes. "It smells like peaches. Is it peach?"

"That's right! It's peach-flavored oolong tea." Chloe chirped, clapping her hands.

"It's amazing how it smells like peaches even though there's no actual fruit in it. Did you add peach juice?"

"No, this is the scent of the tea leaves themselves. It's a flavored tea. Tea leaves have a natural ability to absorb scents, making it easy to infuse them with other flavors."

"Flavored tea? I didn't know such a thing existed." Jacob asked, amazed.

"Of course! Fruit flavors are common, but there are also floral flavors, and even dessert flavors like chocolate, vanilla, caramel, 'Red Velvet Cake,' and 'Christmas Pudding.'"

"What? There's red velvet cake-flavored tea?!" Jacob was shocked. Chloe laughed lightly at his honest reaction.

"Fruit-flavored oolong tea cold brew is really delicious. There's nothing quite like it for summer."

"Yes, it's perfect. The sweet peach scent and subtle nutty flavor... I feel like I've discovered a whole new world."

"I'm really glad you like it. Now, knights, here's something for you."

Chloe handed them something small and light. Jacob quickly accepted it. It was a small cloth bag.

"What's this?"

"It's peach-flavored oolong tea leaves. The iced tea I made last time was prepared using the 'quick-freezing' method of steeping the tea and adding ice. This time, I used the 'cold steeping' method, leaving the tea leaves in water for a long time."

Chloe held up her index finger.

"Cold steeping is really, really easy. Just put tea leaves in water and keep them in a cold place for about 12 hours. I'm giving you these tea leaves so you can try making it yourselves."

"Madam!"

Jacob and Balt looked as if they were about to cry.

"How can you be so kind and considerate? You've even given us precious tea and tea leaves! How can we ever repay you?"

Jacob looked like he was about to kneel.

"Next time, I'll invite the captain as well, so that Jacob, Balt, and Cain can sit across from me. Then you'll have to have tea with me again."

"Really?"

The three knights were stunned. Chloe covered her face with one hand, embarrassed.

"Jacob, Balt, and Cain are my precious tea friends. Please don't feel pressured. I really enjoy drinking tea with others."

Chloe smiled shyly.

At that moment, the trio of knights thought:

'She's an angel…!'

'There's an angel here…!'

'Madam, you're an angel…!'

In that moment, they swore an oath to themselves.

Chloe Battenberg was their noble and cherished Duchess, and to her, they would pledge the greatest loyalty of their lives. With the honor and pride of the Battenberg Knights, they would protect her, even at the cost of their own lives.

••🍂••

"Jacob, what are you drinking?"

Jacob, not wanting to share, quickly hid the glass bottle he was drinking from.

"Hmph, don't worry about it. This is the oolong tea the Madam gave me. It's really something special."

"What? Are you mocking me?"

"Ugh, ignorant fool. You just wouldn't understand."

Before long, the trio of knights started drinking from glass bottles during their hot training sessions. Naturally, this caught the attention of the other thirsty and tired knights.

It didn't take long for everyone to realize that what they were drinking was a special iced tea made by the Duchess herself.

"Madam made this for us? It's really good."

"If you put the leaves in water and leave them in a cold place for a long time, it'll be ready in the morning."

"Who taught you that?"

"The Madam did."

"She even taught us a special brewing method. Isn't she amazing?"

"Yes, truly amazing."

Whenever a knight felt parched during training and drank the iced tea, he would naturally remember that it was made by the Madam.

It wouldn't be an exaggeration to say that the Battenberg Knights, now refreshed and strengthened, would not have achieved such results without the tea.

The tea was delicious, and the cold brew method was quick and simple. It was as if a drop of cool water had fallen into a hot flame. The heat seemed to subside.

And so, the reputation of Chloe, the Duchess of Battenberg, rose. She was known as a kind and thoughtful mistress who even made cold tea for her knights.

••🍂••

Chloe was always mindful of the promise she hadn't been able to keep due to her lack of time. It was a promise to have tea with Kiehl.

Chloe had intended to serve Kiehl tea after he helped her tidy up the carriage the other day, but that day, she had run into Alphonse by chance and missed the opportunity. So, on a leisurely afternoon with no plans, Chloe called Kiehl and Ellie to join her for tea.

"It's an honor to be able to taste tea brewed by you personally."

Ellie nodded enthusiastically next to Kiehl, who was smiling warmly. Having already enjoyed Chloe's tea a few times, Ellie truly adored it.

Chloe left Kiehl seated in the drawing room and went into the kitchen with Ellie. It didn't take long for them to return. Ellie carried a tray with a coffee pot full of tea.

As soon as they returned, the drawing room was filled with a sweet fragrance. The scent was familiar, and Kiehl recognized it immediately.

"It smells sweet. Is it chrysanthemum?"

"That's right." Chloe smiled and sat down. Ellie placed the tray on the table and sat down beside Kiehl.

Chloe poured the tea directly into Kiehl's cup, and it filled with light yellow tea. The tea was strained through a filter, leaving behind dried white petals instead of the usual black tea leaves.

"It's chamomile. It's an herbal tea made from chrysanthemum flower petals. Would you like to try it?"

At her words, Ellie and Kiehl both raised their cups to their lips.

The scent that reached their noses was sweet and pleasant. It had a sweetness and fragrance, perhaps as refreshing as mint, that naturally put their minds at ease.

When the tea touched the tongue, it had a gentle sweetness. It was a sweetness that couldn't be achieved by brewing just the petals. Kiehl looked down at the tea before asking;

"It's sweet. Did you add sugar?"

"No, I added honey. Enjoying chamomile tea with honey is a tradition from the southern peninsula of the empire." Chloe explained kindly. The honey blended with the unique scent of chrysanthemum and chamomile, creating a rich and distinctive flavor.

In her previous life in Spain, Chloe had often enjoyed chamomile tea with honey, a drink known as Manzanilla con miel. It was a tea that could be further enjoyed by adding milk to make milk tea.

Kiehl was impressed. "It's sweet and delicious, like eating chrysanthemum candy. I thought all tea was bland and tasted like water."

The tea had a sweetness and a familiar scent, making it a drink anyone could enjoy, but Chloe had another reason for choosing this tea to serve to Kiehl.

"Kiehl, you mentioned that you have insomnia, right?"

"Oh, yes."

It was a well-known fact in the Vattenberg household that Kiehl, the butler of Battenberg, suffered from insomnia. Unable to sleep, he often worked late into the night or supervised the employees, causing the night shift workers, who had hoped to work leisurely, to end up being treated quite harshly.

"Chamomile is good for insomnia because it relieves tension and improves blood circulation. I added honey, which is also known to promote a good night's sleep."

Kiehl, who was always unusually kind to Chloe, was one of the people she was grateful for. Chloe smiled sincerely as she spoke.

"I hope it helps you, Kiehl, who always works so hard for the dukedom."

Kiehl was genuinely moved. He hadn't expected that the lady of the house would go so far as to consider his sleep issues. And, of course, the tea tasted wonderful.

"There's such deep meaning in this cup of tea… My lady, I'm truly moved."

He stood up from his seat, bowed deeply, and said playfully; "I will continue to work hard to serve you, my lady. Please take care of me."

"Oh, Kiehl! Please sit down," Chloe said, trying to stop him, but she couldn't hide the happy smile on her face. "I really do need you, Kiehl."

Meanwhile, there was one person who didn't appreciate the friendly atmosphere between Chloe and Kiehl.

'My lady is mine...! I enjoyed the chamomile too!'

It was Ellie. She couldn't shake the feeling that her precious person was being taken away from her.

However, she was too timid to express her jealousy, so all she could do was look downcast behind her glasses and keep sipping chamomile tea to cool her burning frustration.

Chloe and Kiehl, unaware of Ellie's feelings, continued to chat with a warm and friendly atmosphere.

"If you want tea in the future, feel free to come by. Kiehl has ordered all the tea I have."

"I just ordered everything with the name 'tea' on it." Kiehl answered, scratching the back of his head as if embarrassed. Chloe, who was sipping from her cup while pondering his words, suddenly spoke.

"You know what? Actually, technically, chamomile isn't a tea."

"Huh? What do you mean?" Kiehl eyes widened slightly. They said they'd sent him tea, but now the Duchess was telling him that chamomile isn't tea? What did she mean?

For a moment, Kiehl thought his lady was joking, but Chloe was serious.

"Technically, tea refers to a drink made from the leaves of the tea plant."

"Oh! I understand, what you and I drank was tea!" Ellie chimed in enthusiastically. Chloe, oblivious to Ellie's intentions, just found her adorable.

"That's right. The tea Ellie and I drank was made from the leaves of the tea plant. Drinks made from ingredients other than tea leaves are technically called 'herbal teas' or 'infusions.'"

"I see! Then what we drank earlier was tea, and this chamomile is an infusion!" Ellie said, glancing at Kiehl.

Kiehl, however, could see the little maid's intentions clearly, which made him want to laugh.

It was obvious that the girl liked her mistress very much. The naive Duchess didn't seem to realize that the maid was trying to keep him in check.

But unfortunately for Ellie, Kiehl wasn't the type of person who would look on with a warm, fatherly smile just because he found someone cute. He decided to shatter the little maid's innocence.

"I truly appreciate your hospitality today, my lady. Is there anything else you need? I, Kiehl, the butler, will do my utmost to assist you with anything you require." He asked Chloe with a kind expression. Chloe answered innocently.

"Hmm, I could use a proper teapot and teacups. Right now, the Duke's residence only has coffee pots and cups."

"Aha, a teapot. Understood."

"Oh my! Thank you so much."

"Haha, it's nothing at all."

Chloe clapped her hands in joy. Kiehl, flaunting his power as the butler, glanced at Ellie.

'What do you think, kid? This is the difference in our levels.'

Indeed, Ellie was crestfallen. Unfortunately, her rival was too strong of an enemy. She didn't have the money or power to buy high-quality imported goods like teapots and teacups and present them to Chloe.

'Ugh, my lady...! There's nothing I can do for you...!'

Ellie looked at Chloe with sad eyes, but reality was reality. The little maid, whose innocence had been shattered, lowered her head pitifully, while Kiehl basked in a sense of victory.

After the teatime that day, Kiehl tried to order the tea utensils for Chloe as promised. However, since tableware is a matter of personal taste, he thought it would be better to let the Duchess choose them herself rather than ordering something arbitrarily.

He reported to Alphonse that his wife would be going out tomorrow to pick out tea utensils. Alphonse's response was as follows:

"I important business tomorrow. Kiehl, you'll have to accompany her."

"Understood."

Kiehl felt a bit uneasy after hearing this response. Hm? Does that mean he was planning to go with her himself?

Although Kiehl had noticed that the Duke and Duchess had become a bit closer after seeing them have tea together every day, he assumed it was because Alphonse liked tea, not because he was interested in Chloe.

Alphonse was a man who had no interest in others, especially not in Chloe, whom he had treated coldly for months.

After hearing Alphonse's answer and leaving his office, Kiehl suddenly had a thought.

'Maybe the relationship between the Duke and Duchess is changing.'

Kiehl had served Alphonse for a long time and knew his master well. His guesses about Alphonse were rarely wrong.

'This might be a sign of that change.'

Kiehl smiled with interest. If this speculation is true... this could become a major event.

The next day, Chloe and Kiehl arrived at the empire's largest port city together.

Tea culture was barely developed in the empire, so obtaining tea leaves, tea utensils, and other related items was only possible through imports. They had just arrived at a tea shop specializing in these goods.

"The business that specializes in tea service is this way. Shall we go, madam?"

As Kiehl spoke, a large carriage suddenly stopped next to them. The person who got off was...

"Duke!" Chloe exclaimed in surprise. The person who got out of the carriage was Alphonse.

He glanced at Chloe with an expressionless face, then looked at Kiehl and spoke without even a greeting.

"I came here because a work appointment was canceled. It happened to be nearby." He said this as if he was making excuses for not asking anyone, then avoided eye contact. However, Chloe didn't notice and simply smiled, happy to see him.

"Oh, is that so? How fortunate!"

Kiehl, who knew Alphonse's schedule for the day, wasn't as oblivious.

'It wasn't close at all. Even with a carriage, it takes at least an hour.' Kiehl thought with a smile.

"Ah! I forgot to buy something. I'm sorry, but I'll be back. Enjoy your time together!" He said suddenly, before bowing politely and leaving quickly.

"Huh! Kiehl!" Chloe exclaimed, watching his retreating figure for a moment. As expected, he was a butler who was perceptive and could read his master's mind well.

Alphonse held out his arm to Chloe, who was still looking in the direction where Kiehl had disappeared in bewilderment. He offered his arm for her to take.

"Shall we go?"

Chloe looked up at Alphonse. Come to think of it, this was the first time they were going out together, and the first time she was being escorted by him.

She smiled shyly, feeling a sense of newness.

"Yes."

After a short walk, they arrived at the tea shop.

"Oh my goodness!"

As soon as she entered the store, Chloe's face lit up as if a switch had been flipped. She quickly let go of Alphonse's arm and started looking into the display cases.

No matter where she looked, there were all kinds of beautiful things— teapots, teacups, various enamels, tea plates, coasters, strainers, and infusers with lovely designs.

Alphonse stood next to her with an unreadable expression.

"Oh my, a real teacup!" Chloe exclaimed happily as she picked up an exotic-looking teacup. Alphonse asked her;

"A real teacup? Is it different from the coffee cups in the manor?"

"Of course! Teacups are flatter and wider than coffee cups to better enjoy the taste and aroma. Moreover, different types of tea require different tea sets."

Chloe, who had now become quite comfortable with Alphonse, chatted excitedly. Alphonse, who had been silently listening with an unreadable expression, suddenly said,

"Duchess, your eyes light up when you talk about tea. Did you know that?"

Chloe, who looked like she would continue talking if left alone, looked at him with wide eyes in surprise and asked,

"Huh? Do they?"

"Yes."

'Was I talking too excitedly?' Chloe thought, feeling embarrassed now that it was too late. Her ears turned a little red.

Alphonse, who was looking down at her, had different thoughts.

He didn't dislike talking with Chloe about tea.

Over the past few days, he had noticed how much she truly enjoyed tea. When they talked about tea, wondering what kind of tea to drink today, or when Alphonse drank the tea she brewed, her face sparkled with vitality.

Such aspects of her were very unfamiliar to Alphonse, as it was something he could never do.

'How can she find such joy in something so simple?' He wondered.

In his opinion, Chloe was quite an interesting person.

"Ahem, ahem."

Chloe was startled and turned toward the sound. The person who cleared their throat was the owner of the tea shop.

"If you need anything, please call me at any time and feel free to look around as much as you like."

Chloe then enjoyed looking around the shop to her heart's content. She examined every corner of the store, not wanting to miss a single thing.

'As expected, a round teapot is best for making delicious tea. However, an unusual design isn't bad for a change of mood. Should the capacity be enough for two people? No, since there are times when I drink tea with many people, a larger capacity would be better...'

'There are so many other wonderful tea utensils besides the teapot. Oh my, look at the delicate engraving on this teacup.'

'This milk pan is really pretty. The handle looks strong too. Aw, this muddler is really cute.'

There was so much to like that choosing what to buy was difficult.

Alphonse, who had given her time to look around to her heart's content, finally approached her.

"Do you like this shop?" He asked.

"Yes! I really do." Chloe replied with a bright smile.

"Thank you for bringing me to this place."

Alphonse, who was watching her sparkling face, said,

"I'm glad you like it."

Alphonse, who had maintained an indifferent expression the entire time, then turned to the store owner and said,

"Owner, I'll take everything in this store."

••🍂••

Alphonse purchased all the products displayed in the tea shop. He bought everything, including the items in the warehouse. To load all the purchased goods, six additional wagons were needed, not including the one that Chloe and Alphonse rode in.

The store owner wasn't the only one who was shocked; Chloe was as well. When she got into the carriage, leaving behind the store owner who was now closing up shop for the day, she still had a dazed look on her face.

"Duchess?"

She finally came to her senses when she heard Alphonse calling her. She looked back at him, noticing he had a peculiar expression on his normally stoic face.

"Aren't you happy?"

Alphonse was puzzled. Since Chloe loved tea, he thought that buying her all those tea sets would make her happy.

Chloe shook her head vigorously.

"No, I'm really happy! Truly. I just wondered if it's really okay to do this."

"In what sense?"

"Well... I feel like you bought a lot, right? I was wondering if there's enough space to store everything, and I was worried it might be financially unreasonable..."

Only after saying that did Chloe realize she might have made a mistake. A thin line appeared between Alphonse's eyebrows.

'Oh no, he doesn't like it when people doubt his abilities.'

Thanks to Alphonse's pride, she wasn't too embarrassed when the tea utensils arrived.

"It's nothing to worry about, Duchess. Didn't I say you could buy whatever you wanted?"

"Oh, you did. I'm sorry."

"Just a few pieces of pottery won't even have the slightest impact on the duchy's finances." Alphonse said while pulling a cigar from his pocket.

It certainly wasn't just 'a few pieces of pottery'. Moreover, they were all imported from foreign countries. Chloe guessed that even though they were just porcelain kettles, they were still quite expensive.

Alphonse cut off the end of the cigar, lit it, and took a deep drag. The smoke he exhaled flowed out the open window of the carriage. He then said,

"We'll expand your tearoom to provide space for the tea utensils. There will be enough space not only for this purchase but also for additional ones in the future."

"Wait... Expand it?!"

Chloe was surprised once again. The Duke's residence was an old mansion with a long history, and its materials and design were unique, so it couldn't be remodeled carelessly. Even Chloe, who had no knowledge of architecture, could tell that renovation would require a significant amount of manpower and money.

However, Chloe could neither argue nor refute him. If she did, it was clear that Alphonse would dislike it even more. So, she decided to stay quiet. She told herself that the Duke's wealth was on a different level from that of a commoner.

Within a few days, Alphonse had expanded the tearoom to accommodate all the tea utensils, proving Chloe's concerns were unfounded.

From then on, Chloe's reputation as a tea enthusiast began to spread throughout the empire, which was known for its coffee culture.
