Chapter 31: Crazy Hair Day
The next morning, the school was having a very animated breakfast, and not in a good way.
Most of the school had been affected by James's potion, making their hair take on random, crazy shapes and colors that could not be removed or changed by normal means.
James was sitting at the table. His hair had been lifted and taken the form of something resembling a pair of horns, while its color had changed from a dark brown to a vibrant apple green.
Normally, one would gather a lot of attention if they attended breakfast with such a hairstyle, except that this time, everyone was in the same boat.
Sirius's hair had become twisted into spirals and taken on a bright orange tone.
Peter's hair was long and pale blonde, to the point that he could almost pass as a sibling of Lucius Malfoy.
Remus's was spiky and purple.
Even the professors had been affected. The Headmaster's hair and beard had turned blue, while part of his mustache had become yellow, making him look extremely ridiculous, although the man didn't seem to care all that much.
"You said the effects would only last an hour…" Sirius complained. "It's been like ten hours, and we're still like this."
"Shhh! Lower your voice," Peter hushed him. "We're going to get in so much trouble if they find out it was us."
"The effect would have lasted an hour…if you had used the correct dosage. Not to mention, the area of effect would have been a lot smaller," James glared at Sirius.
"How was I supposed to know it was going to be so…explosive?" Sirius said in his defense.
"So…how long is it going to last?" Remus asked with serious concern.
James shrugged. "Who knows? But probably not more than a day."
"Probably…" Remus repeated.
"Guys," Peter called. "The Headmaster keeps looking our way…you think he suspects something?"
"We'd be in detention already if he did," Sirius brushed his concerns aside. "But you need to stop talking, or they'll definitely find out."
"It is strange that we haven't been questioned about it…we'd normally be the number one suspects when someone gets pranked," Remus pointed out.
"That's because we're always involved!" Peter snapped.
"Shh! Keep quiet already," Sirius exclaimed.
They then heard someone sitting close by. When they turned their heads, they saw Frank Longbottom and his girlfriend, Alice.
Frank had very short hair, so the only change was that it had turned baby blue.
Alice sat down and sighed. "I look like an old hag…" Her long hair was now pale white.
"Nonsense," Frank hurried to say. "No matter what, you still look beautiful to me."
"Oh, Frank, you're so sweet," Alice said as they stared into each other's eyes.
"Ugh…get a broom closet," Sirius grumbled.
"Shut up, Sirius. I saw you with McKinnon the other day. It was a lot more graphic," Frank said.
"You're dating McKinnon?" Peter asked.
"Shh!" Sirius covered his mouth. "I don't want the entire school to find out."
"Where's Lily?" James noted that she was the only person missing from their usual group and decided to ask.
Alice made a troubled face. "She said she didn't want to leave the room with that pink hair she got."
"Hmm…I don't think it was that bad," James commented. "Compared to what other people got, she got lucky."
"I know!" Alice said. "I thought Lily's pink pigtails were kinda cute, to be honest."
"I doubt that will stop her from attending classes," Remus said.
They all nodded in agreement. There was no chance of that happening.

Lily ended up attending classes with a towel over her head.
But she wouldn't have missed much even if she hadn't, as not much work was done that day in class.
The students were too distracted, talking about what had happened the night before and commenting on everyone's hairstyle.
The reactions to the prank had been very varied. Some students found it funny, some didn't care for the prank but enjoyed their new style, while others were enraged and promised payback against the perpetrators.
During the day, all four of the Marauders had gotten many knowing looks from both students and professors.
Their reputation was well-earned, so they became the most obvious suspects. But only a few Slytherins had gone as far as accusing them without any evidence.
After leaving their last class, the group was walking back to their common room while chatting.
"Are we going to be okay? Those Slytherins looked so angry at us," Peter said, looking around constantly, as if he feared an ambush at any moment.
He no longer cared that much about getting detention. The fear of being beaten up was much more intense.
"Tsk! Stop worrying about that. Those snakes won't do anything. And if they do, we'll just fight back," Sirius exclaimed. "We're not pushovers."
Remus nodded. "For once, I agree with Sirius. If anyone tries something, we'll stick together and f— James, where are you going?" He saw that his friend was about to head in a different direction.
"Oh, I was just going to my lab," James said, as if it were obvious. "You know, we talked about this."
"Do you have to go today?" Remus asked.
"Yeah, that seems dangerous. We should stay in the common room until the effects of the potion go away, at least," Peter suggested. "People will be less angry then."
"No, can't do. I have some important stuff to do. I'll see you at dinner," James said with a serious tone before turning around and leaving.
"It's hard to take him seriously with that green, pointy hair…" Sirius commented as he watched James leave.
"He didn't seem concerned at all," Peter said.
"Well…that's something that hasn't changed, at least," Remus added. "He never runs away from danger...or maybe he is too oblivious, who knows?"
