Chapter 122: The Slytherin Arena
"So, no one can see us?" Peter asked.
"No, but they can hear us, so shut up please," Sirius responded.
James had to place some Disillusionment Charms on them, as they would never fit all four underneath his cloak. Combined with some Silencing Charms on their shoes, they could walk almost anywhere in the castle without being noticed.
Unless they began talking, of course.
It was already completely dark outside, not that one could tell from the dungeons. The only illumination here was the magical torches that one could find every ten steps or so.
"Okay, from here on, stay to one side just in case students come by, and no matter what happens, keep your mouth shut," James said in a whisper, and then he continued forward.
Most students would choose to wait a bit longer after dinner to return to their common room, but a few did pass by.
Once in a while, they would need to stop so Remus could take notes that could later be added to the map.
The dungeons were designed to be difficult to navigate, and new students would often get lost in them.
Besides the common room, the Potions laboratory, and some storage rooms, there were also resting areas equipped with basic commodities like couches, sofas, tables, and small bookshelves.
The Slytherins were also the only house in Hogwarts that had their own private dueling room.
It was utilized by the seniors almost exclusively and only had a small arena with training dummies on the sides, but it was more than any of the other houses had.
This was because Salazar Slytherin was a great believer in honor duels between wizards and liked to use this as a way to solve disputes.
James guided his friends through the dungeons with ease, as he had visited this place a few times in his previous life. It was still difficult to navigate but he was confident he would not get lost, at least.
Eventually, after passing by the entrance of the common rooms and several resting areas, he took them to the dueling arena.
Luckily, it was empty at this time so they could relax a bit here before making their way back.
"Whoa! Why do the Slytherins have something like this for themselves?" Sirius complained.
"I have heard some students talking about this place," Peter commented. "But I didn't think it was real… You think people actually have fights in here?"
"Technically, since it is outside their common room, this training area should be accessible to all students and not just those from Slytherin," Remus said.
"Yes, but good luck getting the Slytherins to let them come in here," James said while he looked around. "I doubt that students would come here after dinner, but you never know, so let's be quick about it."
"I could go stand guard outside if you're worried," Sirius suggested.
"That would be a good idea. If you spot someone approaching, just make a bit of noise to alert us." James reapplied the Invisibility Charms on Sirius, and he went on his way.
James then helped Remus map the room and nearby corridors. The level of detail that Remus wanted in his map made this a lengthy task.
They spent over ten minutes drawing lines and making annotations on pieces of parchment that would later be transferred to the actual artifact he was working on.
Just as they were about to be done, they heard a 'tap tap tap' noise, and it was getting closer.
"Sirius," Peter said.
"Come here, hurry," James said, holding his wand and pointing at Peter first, applying the invisibility on him.
Remus stored all the materials in his bag in a hurry and approached James so he could do the same to him.
"Guys…" Sirius's whispering voice sounded alarmed.
"Go to a corner." James could not see where his friends were, so he ordered them to get out of the way before someone came inside.
And just as he was saying this, he could already hear several sets of steps. Sirius had no time to warn them of the identity of the people approaching, but from the sound of their steps, it appeared like a large group of people were running towards this room.
The first one to cross the entrance was a girl with long black hair. She entered in a rush and had her wand in hand, pointing it in the direction she had come from.
James was standing on the other side of the arena, and with the poor illumination, he couldn't immediately tell who this girl was, although her robes revealed that she was a Slytherin. Her body language also told him that she was being chased by several individuals.
They spotted the shadow of someone about to enter the arena.
The girl did not hesitate and threw several spells at the incoming individual. Two of them were silent stunners, but the third one was an 'Incarcerous' charm that she worded out loud.
'Andromeda.' James recognized not just the voice but also her skilled way of chaining charms together.
The poor fool who came in first had no chance to fight back as he collapsed on the floor, tied up in magical ropes, and stunned.
"Idiot," an annoyed male voice could be heard coming from outside the arena.
The next ones who entered had their shields up. There were four of them.
"It seems like this pointless pursuit has come to an end."
"Yes, you trapped yourself, Black."
'Lestrange brothers, and… Lucius. Of course, who else?' James used a silent charm to enhance his vision in this dark place.
'Snape?' He knew that Severus Snape had been dragged to Lucius's side, but he had expected that after what happened last time, he would have chosen to stay away from following that boy's orders.
'Some people never learn...'
Lucius stepped forward. "Miss Black, I believe that your family owes us a great deal. It is time for some payback."
