However, everything changed after the first generation of magical girls retired. The title of "magical girl" lost its meaning, shifting from heroism to mere celebrity status-a springboard for fame and stardom. No longer protectors of a world once threatened by the monstrous youmas, magical girls had become symbols of a superficial culture. The world, now safe and complacent, bored Shizuka to no end, leaving her disillusioned and disgusted by what magical girls had become.
