Chapter 44: Blood and Lust

The hallways are less intimidating on the way back to my room. I wouldn’t say I’m getting more comfortable here, but I’m definitely getting the lay of the land. By now I’m relatively sure I’m safe here as well, which helps.

Entering my chamber I notice the door into our shared sitting room is slightly ajar. Peering through, Thomas sits at the table, typing on his laptop. The pale glow illuminates his face, and all I can think is how incongruous it looks to see a computer in this place. Everything is burnished with antiquity, hung with drapes and tapestries, and there on an ornately carved table sits a sleek, silver laptop.

That along with Thomas’ smart, well-tailored shirt are the only hints we’re living in the 21st Century.

I knock lightly on the door and Thomas’ head snaps up immediately.

“Hey,” I say in a meek, almost sleepy voice.
