“We’re calling this shit off right now!” I’ve never been so furious in my entire existence.
“Please calm down.” Annika’s voice is low, and she looks over her shoulders to the point of hysteria. Everyone in the chamber is watching, and I couldn’t give a good goddamn.
“I said do it!” I’m on the point of kicking a hole in their little magic circle, snuffing those candles out, throwing Emily over my shoulder, and getting us the hell out of here.
“You have to listen to me,” Annika pleads. “You don’t understand.”
“Goddamn right I don’t,” I scowl in her face. “We had an agreement.”
“You see,” Aisling says, drenched in imperious disdain. “Vampires. This is why we don’t meddle with their kind.”
I was angry before, but now liquid fire dumps into my bloodstream. I wheel on Aisling, ready for a showdown, but Annika gets in my way before I can get a word out. The desperation in her eyes trips me up. She’s more than afraid—she’s petrified.
