We keep turning over leaves of paper in search of the spell we’re after, but they’re all blank. Even the book of spells I found on the shelf is just empty page after empty page.

“It has to be here,” Tatiana says, and when I look at her, I’m stunned by her beauty. Like she’s lit from the inside. Even with her forehead scrunched in concentration, she’s perfectly radiant.

How is it possible to be this beautiful and this afraid at the same time?

“We’ll find it,” I assure her, despite a plummeting feeling in my gut that tells me it’s a lost cause.

“We have to. For Leander.” Then she looks at me and my heart slams to a halt in my chest.

I know it’s Tatiana. This is the cottage where she’s hidden me, and she’s dressed as she always is, speaking as she’s always spoken.

But she has Raya’s face.
