I’m still fuming from the encounter in the foyer. Not just at Marek’s brazen decision to show up in our supposed safe haven, but at Emily’s equally rash move to come out and meet him. After all the care we’ve taken to defend her against the evils of the world, it’s galling to see how careless she can be.

Naturally, Leander is in the smoking room when I stalk in. Instead of sitting in a stupor, he’s standing at the fireplace lost in thought. From the ramrod line of his spine, I’d almost guess he’s sober.

“I hope you don’t mind,” I ask, tilting the scotch bottle to him before filling myself a glass.

“Be my guest.” His eyes don’t leave the fire. “There’s plenty where that came from.” If I didn’t know how thoroughly stocked this mansion was when we leased it, I’d swear Leander traveled with crates of his own.
