Chapter 131: At Long Last

I’ve known pain in my life, but it’s been ages since it’s cut this deeply. Losing Tatiana left me utterly bereft, and the fact that those bastards took my children as well utterly destroyed me. Only those incalculable losses surpass the misery of the scene unfolding.

Emily’s eyes flood with fear, uncertainty, and grief as they search mine.

“I… I don’t think I can do this…” She sounds so small. Like a little girl lost in the woods. But I know she’s so much more than that. Giving her hand another squeeze, I look to where Azriel lies beside me. The pool of blood seeping out of him has slowed, meaning that he’s spent almost everything he has. Breath gurgles in his throat, each weaker than the one before.

“Quickly now, my darling,” I whisper to Emily. “We don’t have much time.” The girl bites her lip, and I can see in an instant she’s going to do it. She’s going to hate every second of it, but she’s going to do it.
