Chapter 126: Ticking Clock

Thomas

I jerk upright in my bed, panting as if I’ve run a hundred miles. Pouring with so much sweat, the sheets are soaked. My heart’s pounding so hard it feels like I’m about to explode.

Looking at the empty bed next to me only adds fuel to the fire of my darkest fears. Straining my ears above my feverish breathing, all I can think is how quiet the house is.

Too quiet.

Leaping out of bed, I strip off my sodden pajamas and wrestle my way into some clothes. I’m raring to go before I even have the slightest idea where I’m headed or what I might be walking into. All I know is that Emily’s gone. I can feel her absence in this house like a gaping hole in my guts.

The bond should have woken me before now. Putting a hand in the center of my chest to still my heart, I sense that the link between Emily and I has shifted. I can feel her, but only faintly. Not gone, just… far. Different.
