Chapter 62: Madison

They’d met in college, and for a long time, he had only loved two things in life: her and his work—the latter perhaps a bit more, which had driven a wedge between them. As the company grew, so did the distance between them. Noah admitted he had been blind to the signs of her unhappiness, and that not everything was as perfect as he’d believed after all.

“I used to blame Brianne for everything,” he acknowledged, his expression scrunching into one of fierce self-condemnation. I wanted to reach out and comfort him but didn’t dare. “But now, I see that I was at fault, too.”

She had cheated on him and left, claiming he’d neglected her. And all the while, she had been pregnant with Chris, a fact Noah hadn’t known until five years after his birth.

“Didn’t Brianne ever tell you how she felt before that?” I asked gently.

Noah shook his head. “No, she never did. I was clueless. I thought that we were happy…”
