Elara crouched behind the crumbled remains of an aqueduct as the distant echoes of explosions rippled through the air. The Forum, the heart of ancient Rome, was visible through the smoky haze. Its columns and arches, once symbols of imperial glory, now stood as shadows of their former selves.
"Chrono, status on those drones?" she whispered, peeking out from her cover.
"The drones are deploying surveillance systems. Their primary focus appears to be the Basilica of Maxentius. Scans indicate a large concentration of Revisionist technology within."
Elara frowned. The Basilica of Maxentius had been one of Rome's architectural marvels, but in this timeline, it was also ground zero for the Revisionists' operations.
"Why there?" she asked.
"Analyzing... The Basilica is being used as a command center. Energy readings suggest a temporal relay device is active inside."
"A relay?" Elara muttered, her heart sinking. Temporal relays were dangerous. They could anchor Revisionist agents to a specific time, allowing them to manipulate events with precision.
"I'll have to neutralize it," she said, adjusting her temporal disruptor—a sleek weapon designed to disable advanced tech without causing undue harm to the surrounding era.
"Proceed with caution," Chrono advised. "Multiple hostiles detected inside the Basilica."
The streets of Rome were a chaotic blend of fleeing civilians, opportunistic looters, and weary soldiers. Elara moved carefully, blending into the shadows as she made her way toward the Basilica. Her cloaking device flickered briefly, struggling to adapt to the dense smoke.
As she approached the structure, she heard the unmistakable hum of Revisionist drones. Two of them hovered near the entrance, their metallic shells glowing faintly with blue energy.
"Chrono, disable their comms," she whispered.
"Comms disrupted. Drones will now operate independently. Proceed."
Elara pulled out her disruptor, taking careful aim. With a soft whir, the weapon fired a pulse of energy, striking the first drone. It sparked and crashed to the ground, its lights dimming. The second drone spun toward her, its sensors locking on, but she was faster. Another pulse, and it too fell, silent and lifeless.
"Two down," she muttered, stepping over the wreckage.
Inside the Basilica, the air was thick with an unnatural hum. The Revisionists had transformed the ancient structure into a high-tech fortress. Holographic displays floated in midair, projecting maps of the Roman Empire. Operatives in sleek, futuristic armor moved between consoles, their voices low but tense.
At the center of the room stood the relay. It was a towering device of alien design, its surface pulsating with energy. Streams of light spiraled upward, connecting it to a glowing rift in the air—a tear in time itself.
"Chrono, how do we shut it down?" Elara asked, her voice barely audible.
"The relay's core must be overloaded. However, doing so will trigger a temporal backlash. You must evacuate the area immediately after destabilization."
"Of course," she muttered. Nothing was ever simple.
Elara moved carefully, sticking to the shadows as she approached the relay. But before she could reach it, a voice rang out.
"You shouldn't be here."
She froze, her disruptor at the ready. A man stepped out from the shadows, his armor sleek and black, his face partially obscured by a visor.
"Kai Rynar," she said, recognizing him instantly. The leader of the Revisionists.
Kai tilted his head, a smirk playing on his lips. "Dr. Trent. I was wondering when the Chrono-Guard would send someone to interfere."
"You're destabilizing the timeline," Elara said, her tone sharp. "Whatever you think you're doing, it's not worth the risk."
Kai chuckled. "The risk? The timeline you're protecting is already a fabrication. Do you even know the truth about the history you're so desperate to preserve?"
Elara tightened her grip on her weapon. "What are you talking about?"
Kai gestured to the relay. "The Roman Empire wasn't supposed to fall here, not like this. It was manipulated—your organization saw to that centuries ago. We're simply restoring what was meant to be."
"That's a convenient excuse for chaos," Elara snapped.
Kai's smirk faded. "You think you're the hero, don't you? The savior of history. But history doesn't belong to you—or the Chrono-Guard."
He raised his weapon, a sleek rifle glowing with unfamiliar energy. Elara dove behind a column as the first shot ricocheted off the marble, sending shards flying.
The room erupted into chaos. Operatives scrambled to defend the relay as Elara returned fire, her disruptor pulsing with blue energy. She moved quickly, taking out consoles and drones, each shot destabilizing the Revisionists' hold on the Basilica.
But Kai was relentless. His shots were precise, forcing her to stay on the defensive.
"Chrono, how much time do I have?" she shouted, ducking behind a fallen pillar.
"Relay destabilization will take 90 seconds. You must initiate the sequence now."
Elara cursed under her breath. She activated the disruptor's overload function, aiming it at the relay's core. The device whirred to life, sending a surge of energy into the relay.
The rift above it flickered violently, its edges sparking with uncontrolled power.
"You can't stop this, Elara!" Kai shouted, his voice barely audible over the roar of the relay.
"Watch me," she muttered, firing one last pulse.
The relay exploded in a blinding flash, the shockwave throwing her to the ground. For a moment, everything was silent.
Then, the rift began to collapse.
"Chrono, get me out of here!" Elara shouted, activating her emergency recall. The Time Pod's beacon flared to life, enveloping her in a vortex of light just as the Basilica crumbled around her.
She materialized back in the Time Monitoring Command, her knees buckling as the pod's door opened.
"Mission complete," Chrono reported.
Elara staggered out, her heart still racing. Ryvek was waiting for her, his expression unreadable.
"Did you succeed?" he asked.
"The relay is destroyed," Elara said. "But Kai's still out there. And he knows something—something about us."
Ryvek's jaw tightened. "We'll deal with him later. For now, get some rest."
But Elara couldn't shake Kai's words. If the history she was protecting was a lie, what was the truth?
And more importantly, whose side was she really on?
