(Chapter 14)
"I appreciate you helping me, Lady Clarisse," Caelira said softly, her voice almost a whisper.
Clarisse Faeloria responded with a thin smile, realizing that she could no longer ignore Caelira's request.
In the distance, they saw Kaelion Arvasyn speaking with a young nobleman. As the crown prince, Kaelion was known for his unmatched charm and friendly demeanor at the Academy. However, behind his smile, Kaelion carried a burden that only a few knew about.
"I'm sad because His Highness has never been this way with me. Perhaps he really hates me," Caelira whispered, her voice trembling with deep sadness.
Clarisse looked at Caelira with pity. "I don't think that's the reason. Kaelion isn't someone full of hatred. Maybe it's all because of your engagement. Do you think that's it?"
Caelira lowered her head, her gaze uncertain as it rested on the ground. "Maybe... maybe that's why His Highness is so cold toward me."
The next day, Clarisse had the chance to speak directly with Kaelion.
Clarisse hoped she could convey Caelira's request well. However, as expected, Kaelion remained reluctant to discuss his fiancée.
"Your Highness, please, could you be a little kinder to Lady Caelira?" Clarisse asked softly yet firmly.
Kaelion sighed, his eyes showing fatigue. "Did she ask you to persuade me again? I've spoken enough with her, Clarisse."
Clarisse remained silent, realizing that her efforts might be in vain. However, the image of Caelira, always looking sad, made her heart ache.
"Your Highness, wouldn't it be wiser if we try to respect the rules that have been set? If this is fate, we must face it as best we can."
Kaelion took a deep breath, holding back his emotions.
"I'm not ready to be a husband, Clarisse. I'm still the crown prince, a student at the Academy. How could I possibly meet those expectations now?"
Clarisse looked at Kaelion with understanding. "I understand, Your Highness. But what if you could just be a little kinder? It would make everything easier for Lady Caelira."
Kaelion gave a thin smile, his eyes shining with mystery. "You always persuade me with such wise words. I'm beginning to feel that you understand me better than I understand myself."
From a distance, Caelira watched their interaction. Even though she had used magic to enhance her hearing, every laugh and smile from Kaelion toward Clarisse made her heart ache. Caelira clenched her fingers tightly, a wave of jealousy consuming her.
Caelira compared herself to Clarisse. Kaelion's childhood friend, Clarisse, had a deep connection with the crown prince, while Caelira was only an unwanted fiancée.
When Clarisse said gently, "Your Highness, you don't need to change. Stay the way I know you, someone kind and caring," the feeling of envy further tormented Caelira's heart.
Kaelion chuckled. "You really know how to speak, Clarisse. Should I stay this way to make everyone comfortable, including you?"
Caelira held her breath as she listened to Kaelion's response. However, the next words from the crown prince struck her heart deeply.
"If only you were my fiancée, maybe I wouldn't feel so pressured," Kaelion said casually, unaware of the impact of his words.
Clarisse was shocked. "Your Highness, what do you mean?!" she asked sternly, her eyes wide in surprise.
Kaelion only gave a faint smile, casually leaning back. "Nothing. Just a thought. Forget about it," he said enigmatically, leaving Clarisse confused and Caelira in deep pain.
