Chapter 2: My Dad's Just a Farmer
Narita Airport, Tokyo
At the international arrivals gate, people were steadily streaming out. Ronan, wearing a pair of sunglasses and a light shirt, pulled a small suitcase behind him as he emerged from the crowd.
Outside, a stunning woman with long blue hair was waiting for him.
"Ronan, how does it feel to be back in Japan again?"
"Well, at least the wind here doesn't blow blood-stained sand into my mouth. That's a plus."
"You really are something. Why did you ever want to go to the Middle East in the first place?"
"Emotional scars. I wanted to find some life-risking work to distract myself, and then I realized I was actually pretty good at being on the battlefield."
"You're definitely that man's son."
The beautiful woman sighed and picked up Ronan's luggage.
"Anyway, let's get in the car first. I'll take you to your new place."
"Thanks, Aunt Kaname."
...
The car moved slowly along the road, surrounded by crowded sidewalks and heavy traffic.
As one of Japan's most bustling cities, Tokyo was packed with people, and the pace of life here was fast.
"Aunt Kaname, is this car's glass bulletproof? Are there any anti-explosion measures..."
"Nothing like that. Japan is very safe."
The blue-haired woman, whom Ronan referred to as "Aunt Kaname," was named Kaname Sagara. She was the wife of the "Uncle Sagara" Rona often mentioned.
As she drove, Kaname reached over and handed Ronan a document from the side.
"This is your student ID. Take a look."
"Alright."
Ronan took the student ID from her hand. On it was a photo of a well-dressed blond teenager. The name column clearly read "Yao Ronan," and at the top was the name of the school.
"Shuchiin Academy? A private school?"
"That's right. It's one of Tokyo's most prestigious schools for the elite."
"An elite school? What do you want me to do there?"
"Study, of course."
"I know it's for studying, but... I'm not exactly 'elite.' My dad's just a simple, hardworking farmer who spends his days tending to the fields. Wouldn't it be better to just send me to a regular high school?"
"Think carefully about what your father did before he became a farmer."
"Voluntarily maintaining world peace and making a little money on the side."
"That's how he explained it to you!?"
"Seems like he did a lot of things around here back in the day, but he never went into detail. After making some money, he handed everything over to Uncle Sagara."
"Exactly. Because of your father, my husband and I have been living apart for a long time."
"Do you want me to apologize?"
"Don't bother."
"Aunt Kaname, you still haven't told me why you're sending me to that school. Is there some secret mission?"
"There actually is a mission."
"What?"
Ronam's expression immediately turned serious.
"What kind of mission? Rooting out spies? Protecting VIPs? Or assassinations..."
"Study hard and strive for excellence. That's your mission."
"..."
"Don't look so disappointed. This is your father's idea. Stop running off to war zones all the time and take a seat to read more books."
"Books? I do read."
"What books?"
"Jane's Defence Weekly, Aviation Week & Space Technology, ***IATION*. Oh, and I've read a few issues of Japan's World Ships too."
"...Never mind. You're just like your father. There's another reason I'm sending you to that school."
"What?"
"I'm a teacher there. I can keep an eye on you at all times."
"Wait, what?"
...
The car pulled up to a high-end apartment building.
Kaname used a key to open one of the doors and then tossed the key to Ronan.
"You'll be living here from now on. I live right next door, so if you need anything, you can come to me directly."
"Got it."
"By the way, what kind of emotional issues made you leave Japan and head to the Middle East? You were only twelve when you left, right?" Kaname asked curiously.
"Oh, I got my heart broken."
"Huh?"
"To put it simply, when I was in Kyoto, I confessed to a girl and got rejected. You know how it is—back then, I was just a kid who knew nothing about love. I foolishly confessed, only to be gracefully turned down. The emotional trauma was so bad that I went home, and then my dad suggested I go to the Middle East."
"..."
"But after spending about a month in the Middle East, I stopped caring about it. Except for coming home during holidays, I spent four years carrying a gun over there. When I heard I was being sent back to Japan, I instinctively refused."
"...While I'm curious about who that girl was, I won't ask. But you can rest assured—Japan might not be big, but the chances of running into someone you met years ago are pretty slim."
"I know that."
"Alright then... Wait, I just remembered. Four years ago, you had some kind of conflict with the Shinomiya conglomerate, right?"
"Yeah, I did."
"What happened?"
"When I was twelve, I took a bit of money from my dad, but it wasn't enough to live on. So, I thought I'd invest in something to make some extra cash. And then... I ended up clashing with those bastards from the Shinomiya family."
"...What did you do?"
"Land disputes. You know how it is—a twelve-year-old kid doesn't understand business wars. The Shinomiya subsidiary played dirty, and I was out of options."
"Oh, so you gave up?"
"No, I got so angry that I escalated the business conflict into a full-blown fight. I blew up a few of their major companies in Kyoto and sank a couple of their merchant ships. Some people died in the process."
"..."
"After that, you know how it went. I was already heartbroken, so I just left the country to lay low."
"I won't even comment on the logic of 'laying low in a war zone,'" Kaname said, feeling a headache coming on. "But there's something I should probably warn you about. There are members of the Shinomiya family attending Shuchiin Academy."
"That's quite a coincidence. Coming all the way from Kyoto to Tokyo to study... Oh, that person."
Ronan frowned as he remembered.
He had indeed met her back then. There was a girl from the Shinomiya family who was around his age, the eldest daughter of the family's head. Her name was...
"Kaguya Shinomiya?"
"You know her?"
"I've met her once before. Honestly, this is a good thing."
"A good thing? How so?"
"She's lucky. I'll start dismantling the Shinomiya family with her."
"Hey, hey, hey! Don't do anything reckless! The whole reason I'm here is to make sure you don't cross any lines. Don't even think about doing something that dangerous."
Ronan replied, "Aunt Kaname, you don't understand. I have a huge grudge against the Shinomiya family, and Kaguya Shinomiya is part of it. My heartbreak back then? She's got something to do with it."
