A myriad of thoughts come to an abrupt end.
Felicity affectionately rises on her tiptoes to plant a gentle kiss on Dashiell's forehead, her eyes brimming with boundless tenderness:
"If it weren't for his heartless betrayal, how would I have ever met you, my little angel?"
"That $300,000 handbag you've been eyeing? I'll buy it for you when we get back. Next time, pick something even pricier, darling. I can afford it."
Watching them, the soft tingling in my wrist seems to go straight to my heart, leaving me breathless.
I wrench my hand free from Felicity's unyielding grip, no longer willing to serve as a reference point for their love.
As I turn to leave, Dashiell deliberately sticks out his foot, tripping me.
"Faye, how clumsy of you!"
I collapse to my knees, the medical report in my hand scattering at Felicity's feet.
Seeing me fall, Felicity's expression tightens, and she instinctively reaches out to help me.
Dashiell grabs her hand, exclaiming:
"What's this?"
Felicity's gaze is drawn to the report on the ground.
She picks it up, quickly scanning its contents.
"Artificial heart replacement......"
A flash of anger crosses Felicity's face.
She hurls the medical report at my face."Faye, I can't believe you'd stoop so low as to use such underhanded tactics to scam people for money!"
"You're just like you were seven years ago, everything's about money, and money is all you see!"
I stood up, looking at Felicity's healthy body.
A faint smile tugged at the corner of my mouth as I silently picked up the medical report.
"Ms. Kerpan, since you know I like money, how about lending me some more?"
Dashiell, overcome with emotion, cried as he shook the woman's arm,
But the look he gave me was full of mockery and malice.
"Darling, maybe it's true?"
"And... Faye left you back then, which is why you received a heart from a kind donor!"
"Why don't we help him?"
These words seemed to remind Felicity of the fact that I had once abandoned her for money.
The anger and hesitation in Felicity's eyes were instantly frozen over with coldness.
"A heart from those kind people can't save someone without compassion or loyalty. He doesn't deserve it."
Felicity turned away, pulling Dashiell with her, while Dashiell continued to plead.
But in the moment he looked back at me, the curve of his lips was so scornful and venomous.
I picked up the medical report that Dashiell had trampled all over. The mechanical heart suddenly trembled with a vibration that didn't belong to it.
My pupils dilated, and the silhouettes of the two people gradually blurred.
After a long while, I wiped away the blood that had seeped from the corner of my mouth, staring at the words "Artificial Heart Replacement."
My fingers traced the scar on my chest, etched there for seven years.
Felicity still doesn't know.
The heart beating in her chest is mine.
