Chapter Ten

Amara sat at her desk, staring blankly at the computer screen. The words on the document blurred as her mind spiraled into a whirlwind of thoughts.

Gregory had denied everything. He had looked her straight in the eye and told her that nothing had happened between them. But she knew better. Her body remembered. The way he touched her, the way he felt—those things couldn't be fabricated.

And yet, he had dismissed her as if she were nothing more than a forgettable encounter.

The office buzzed around her, employees moving swiftly, papers rustling, phones ringing. Amara tried to focus, but her fingers trembled over the keyboard. Her heart was still raw from their conversation.

Just then, an email notification popped up on her screen.

Subject: Urgent – Meet Me in My Office

From: Gregory Hayes

Her stomach twisted. Was he about to fire her? Embarrass her again? Taking a deep breath, she pushed her chair back and stood, smoothing out her skirt. If he wanted to pretend nothing had happened, fine. She would act like she didn't care either.

The walk to his office felt longer than usual. Each step echoed in her ears, her heartbeat quickening. When she reached his door, she knocked lightly before pushing it open.

Gregory sat behind his desk, looking as composed as ever. His sharp gaze lifted from the document he was reading, locking onto her with an unreadable expression.

"Sit," he ordered.

She obeyed but kept her back straight, refusing to shrink under his scrutiny.

"You've been distracted at work," he said. "Is there a problem?"

Amara clenched her hands together in her lap. Was he seriously asking her that? After what had happened?

"No," she answered curtly.

His jaw tightened. "I don't tolerate inefficiency, Amara."

Her nails dug into her palm. "Understood, sir."

For a moment, silence stretched between them, thick with unspoken words. Then, Gregory exhaled sharply and leaned back in his chair. "That's all. Get back to work."

Amara's lips parted slightly, expecting something more, but he had already turned his attention to his papers. Dismissed.

She stood and walked out, her chest burning with frustration. If he wanted to be cold and distant, she could do the same.

A Strange Message

Back at her desk, Amara sank into her chair and sighed. She had barely gotten through the day, and now Gregory was making it even harder.

Her phone vibrated on the desk. She picked it up, expecting a message from Zara, but her stomach dropped when she saw the sender.

Unknown Number: You don't belong there.

Her breath hitched. She blinked, rereading the message.

Who was this?

Before she could even process it, another message came through.

Unknown Number: Leave before it's too late.

A chill crept up her spine.

She quickly glanced around the office. No one was paying attention to her. Had someone seen her with Gregory? Was this some kind of warning?

Her fingers hovered over the screen. Should she reply? Demand to know who was sending these messages? But something told her not to.

Instead, she locked her phone and slid it into her drawer. She wasn't going to let some anonymous message scare her.

But no matter how hard she tried, the uneasy feeling wouldn't go away.
