Chapter 5: If You Have Too Much Money, Buy a Cruise Ship
Gu Ziming sat in the office of Donghai Gu Ziming's Chemical and Biological Laboratory, staring out the window. The more he thought about it, the more he found himself in an odd, yet somewhat enviable situation: he had too much money.
Yes, that's right. Too much money.
Gu Ziming couldn't help but think about his past. Some people are just born lucky.
His father had earned a Ph.D. in biology from Massachusetts and, after graduating, met his mother, who was already an executive at a Fortune 500 company. The two of them built an empire together. His father started a business, and his mother resigned from her high-profile job to assist in its management.
The result? A unicorn biotechnology company with a peak market value of over 60 billion USD.
But then, disaster struck. For reasons that still baffled many, the United States unilaterally added his parents' company to a sanctions list, accusing them of crimes against national security. Shortly after, his parents tragically died in a plane crash during a flight over the Pacific.
The once-thriving company fell into decline after the loss of its leaders. The company was sold off, and its assets were liquidated. However, Gu Ziming retained the core technology, as well as the biochemical laboratory that his parents had built from the ground up.
Despite the chaos, Gu Ziming wasn't particularly interested in expanding the business. It was more of a legacy project — a way to honor his parents. Now, however, as he stared at the more than 10 billion USD in his account, Gu Ziming found himself facing a peculiar dilemma: How could he spend all this money within the span of a month?
He recalled a rather bizarre saying: You can never spend it all in a lifetime.
The thought lingered in his mind, adding to the growing sense of urgency.
Looking back at the events of the world, the Earth was heading toward a grim future. The sun's activity had increased, and soon enough, Lin Fan, the protagonist, would become the "god of war," dominating the early stages of the end times.
However, the real turning point came when the polar glaciers began to melt, causing sea levels to rise by 50 to 60 meters. Within a year, island nations would be submerged.
The protagonist, Lin Fan, and his harem would eventually leave their flooded homeland behind, making their way toward the southwest plateau in search of a safer haven.
Gu Ziming could follow the protagonist's lead, grow his assets, and eventually join the great migration. But he didn't want to rely solely on that path. Instead, he opted for a more immediate solution — buying a cruise ship to prepare for the eventual rise in sea levels.
"I need to spend the money," Gu Ziming mused to himself. "Who knows what will happen to the monetary system after the world ends? In the worst-case scenario, bartering may become the norm."
Gu Ziming picked up the phone and called his assistant, Xiao Zhang.
"Xiao Zhang, I need you to find me a cruise ship. The bigger, the better, and it must be ready for delivery as soon as possible."
Xiao Zhang, who had become accustomed to his boss's unpredictable requests, didn't hesitate. He immediately began searching for available cruise ships online.
A 100,000-ton cruise ship would take years to build, so Gu Ziming had to settle for something that was already completed and awaiting sale.
As he waited for his assistant to gather the information, Gu Ziming dialed Qin Feifei's number. He had planned to ask for her guidance on producing special graphene materials, but Liu Xiaoxiang, who had always been part of the team, was unreachable.
"I guess I'll have to deal with this on my own," Gu Ziming muttered under his breath before calling Qin Feifei again.
"Miss Qin, it's Gu Ziming. Is Professor Liu back yet?"
Qin Feifei, her voice cheerful, replied, "Teacher Liu hasn't returned yet. She told us she would be on a business trip for more than a month. But don't worry about it, Senior Brother Gu!"
Gu Ziming, sensing a flicker of unease at the timing of her absence, pressed on, "So, if I wanted to start the research now, what would I do?"
"Don't worry, Senior Brother Gu. Teacher Liu said that if you need to start now, just call me, and I'll help with whatever you need," Qin Feifei answered, her tone eager.
Gu Ziming couldn't help but smile. "I didn't know you could do this, Junior Sister Feifei. That's great."
Qin Feifei blushed at the compliment, but didn't say anything. After all, she was indeed his junior, and Gu Ziming had always treated her like one.
"Alright then, I'm going to start the project. I'll come to pick you up tomorrow to go to the laboratory," Gu Ziming decided.
Though Gu Ziming's father had originally started in biology, he had branched out into materials science and chemistry. His laboratory was equipped for producing special graphene materials, and Gu Ziming planned to move forward with it despite the inevitable challenges.
"Sounds good. I'll be ready," Qin Feifei responded, before ending the call.
While his laboratory could only produce a small batch of graphene materials at first, Gu Ziming didn't care about efficiency at the moment. Time was his greatest asset — the world was on the brink of collapse, and he needed to prepare quickly.
In addition to the graphene materials, Gu Ziming had already secured three construction teams to begin renovation work on his manor and villa.
The first team was a security construction team, experts who specialized in fortifying estates for the ultra-wealthy. They had once constructed a security fortress in the Golden Triangle, one that even local rebels couldn't breach.
Gu Ziming greeted the leader of the security team, a muscular man named Wang Zhi, who removed his helmet and offered a friendly smile.
"Mr. Gu, it's an honor. I'm Captain Wang, in charge of your security construction," the man said, his voice warm and respectful.
"Nice to meet you, Captain Wang. I have two requirements: stability and speed. Can you handle that?" Gu Ziming asked, his tone firm.
"Absolutely, Mr. Gu," Wang Zhi replied confidently. "We've already prepared for this. Our projected timeline is 20 days. In the first ten days, we'll complete the security plan and the perimeter fencing. The remaining ten days will focus on installing the underground warehouse, solar panels, and finalizing the insulation materials for the villa. We'll move quickly."
Gu Ziming nodded in approval, but still added, "I want it finished in 17 days, not 20."
Wang Zhi gave a determined nod. "We'll make it happen, Mr. Gu."
As the renovation work progressed, Gu Ziming felt a renewed sense of urgency. The end of the world was fast approaching, and he was determined to be ready for whatever came next.
