Tonight was destined to be sleepless. My mind kept replaying the chat logs and the face of that girl.
A cold chill ran through me.
I don't know how long I lay there before I heard rustling beside me.
Miller didn't even look at me as he walked straight to the bathroom.
I quietly got up and followed him.
At the door, I clearly heard a conversation start.
"Brother, why didn't you come keep me company tonight? Do you still love Harmony?"
"Don't worry, honey. I lost all feelings for her long ago. I'm saving myself just for you now. Even when she got all hot and bothered tonight, I didn't touch her. Baby, I'll come see you in a bit."
The hesitant voice continued, "But Harmony is such a beauty. Do you really feel nothing for her?"
I wanted to hear Miller's answer too, but he bluntly said: "She's not even half as young and pretty as you. Seeing her throw herself at me only disgusts me."
"So when will you divorce her? I want you to marry me."
Miller's voice suddenly turned cold. "I'm not divorcing her. You've crossed a line."
What did that mean? Did he want to have his cake and eat it too?My heart ached with a sharp pain, but I couldn't feel the cold floor beneath my feet.
I silently retreated to the bedroom and lay down, pretending to be asleep.
Miller hung up the phone and came over to nudge me. Seeing no response, he started getting dressed and even went to the vanity to spray on some cologne.
A few minutes later, I heard the door close. I couldn't hold back anymore. Tears poured out uncontrollably, soaking my pillow.
Miller didn't come home all night. He played his part to perfection, even sending me a message about an emergency at the hospital.
"Saw you were asleep and didn't want to wake you. There's an emergency at the hospital, so I won't be home tonight, babe."
Looking at the insincere message, I let out a cold laugh. If I hadn't already known where he was going, I might have actually fallen for it.
Early the next morning,
Miller returned. He had changed his clothes. He came to the bed and kissed my forehead, gently calling out, "Scarlett, darling, time to wake up for breakfast."I dressed as if I had just woken up, urging him to hurry off to work.
He didn't notice anything amiss and left home directly.
After he was gone, I stumbled into the bathroom in a daze, startled by the ghastly pale face staring back at me in the mirror.
Hastily tidying myself up, I grabbed the medication Miller had given me and headed to my friend's private clinic.
As I took off my sunglasses, my friend looked surprised for a moment. She joked, "Hannah, did you go robbing last night? Those are some serious dark circles."
Instead of laughing it off as usual, I immediately pulled out the pill bottle and asked her to run some tests.
"Felicity, can you analyze these pills for me? I suspect Miller..."
Seeing my grave expression, Felicity didn't even wait for me to finish before dashing out of the room.
I waited anxiously in her office, my palms sweating.
An hour later, Felicity returned.
She opened the door, looking at me hesitantly before finally handing me a document.
My head spinning with nervousness, it took me several attempts to open the file.
Weren't they... just sleeping pills?
Miller had been giving me psychiatric medication all along, but I didn't have any mental illness!I froze, unable to move until Felicity tapped me with teary eyes.
She told me, "Luckily, you haven't been taking them for long, so recovery is still possible. I can help you with some rehabilitation to see if we can recover your memories from six months ago."
Her words were cautious, and I knew it was my fault.
Six months ago, after my injury, I was particularly averse to socializing with friends. Only Miller could stay by my side. Perhaps that's when my problems started.
My eyes welled up with tears as I choked out, "I'm sorry, Felicity. It's my fault."
Felicity said nothing and proceeded to run some tests on me. She said my memory might have been interfered with through hypnosis.
Full recovery would take some time and a bit of luck.
As we left the hospital, I was still in a daze, holding the pills that had been swapped for vitamins.
I silently vowed to uncover the truth.
