Chapter 10: The Cost of PowerKent Innovations – A Rough StartMartha Kent stood at the head of the conference table, facing a room full of skeptical executives. Some of them had been with the company from the start, but others had only joined after Lex's investment, bringing corporate expectations with them.
"I understand there are concerns about my appointment," Martha began, her voice calm but firm. "So let's address them now."
One of the board members, a man named Douglas Reed, cleared his throat. "Mrs. Kent, while we respect Lazarus's decision, many of us have worked in high-level corporate environments for years. You… haven't."
Martha met his gaze evenly. "I ran financial operations for my family, worked in the state legislature, and handled high-pressure negotiations. I may not have been a CEO before, but I know how to lead."
Some of the board members still looked uncertain.
That's when Lazarus, leaning back in his chair, finally spoke. "Let's be clear. This isn't up for debate. My mother is CEO. If anyone has a problem with that, they're free to leave."
Silence filled the room. No one moved.
Martha glanced at her son, her expression unreadable. Then she turned back to the board. "Now, let's get to work."
LuthorCorp – Lionel StrikesAcross town, Lionel Luthor sat in his office, reviewing a report on Kent Innovations. His contacts had been feeding him information for weeks, and now he had what he needed.
"Sir," his assistant said, stepping in, "our investors are getting concerned about Kent Innovations' rapid expansion."
Lionel smirked. "Good. That means they see the threat."
He turned his chair toward the window, gazing out over Metropolis. "It's time to remind young Lazarus that no empire is built without opposition."
Kent Farm – The WarningThat evening, Lazarus arrived home to find Martha in the kitchen, going over financial reports.
"I don't like this," she admitted. "It feels like we're painting a target on our backs."
Lazarus leaned against the counter. "Lionel was always going to come after us. This just makes it official."
Martha sighed. "Laz, I trust you, but don't let this business change who you are."
Lazarus met her gaze. "I won't. But I also won't let anyone take what we've built."
Martha studied him, then nodded. "Then we fight smart."
Lazarus smirked. "Always."
Luthor Mansion – A Declaration of WarLater that night, Lazarus met with Lex in his study.
"My father's making moves," Lex said, pouring a drink. "He's already lining up political pressure, investors, and regulatory blockades."
Lazarus smirked. "Let him."
Lex raised an eyebrow. "You're not worried?"
Lazarus took a sip of his drink. "He's playing chess. I'm playing something far bigger."
Lex chuckled. "This is going to be fun."
Lazarus nodded. "For us. Not for Lionel."
