Chapter 18
The next day, the entire Shatterdome was alive with movement.
Technicians rushed back and forth, engineers worked tirelessly on final adjustments, and the pilots—both experienced and new—stood together, preparing for what could be their final battle.
This was it.
The mission that could end the war.
Four Jaegers were chosen for the mission:
Striker Eureka – The fastest and most advanced Mark-5 Jaeger, piloted by Herc and Chuck Hansen.Gipsy Danger – The legendary Mark-3 Jaeger, piloted by Raleigh Becket and Mako Mori.Crimson Typhoon – The agile, triple-arm Jaeger, piloted by the Wei Tang Brothers.Rajah – Shane's customized Jaeger, now upgraded with a sensory detection system, reinforced armor, and a neural response boost.
Left behind to defend the Shatterdome was Cherno Alpha, the heavyweight, tank-like Jaeger, which—despite being damaged—was still a formidable defense unit.
In the war room, the pilots and mission specialists stood gathered around the holographic projection of the Breach.
Marshal Pentecost looked at them all, his face serious.
Pentecost: "We only get one shot at this. We drop the bomb into the Breach and close it for good. But the question remains—how do we make sure the bomb actually enters?"
There was silence.
Everyone knew the issue.
The Breach only allowed Kaiju to pass through.
If a Jaeger—or anything man-made—tried to enter, it would be rejected.
They had already discussed trying to synchronize with a Kaiju somehow, but no one could come up with a feasible way to do it.
Then, Shane spoke up.
He leaned forward, arms crossed, eyes sharp.
Shane: "We've been overcomplicating this. If only Kaiju can enter, why don't we just attach the bomb to a dead one?"
The room went silent.
Every single pilot, engineer, and officer just stared at him.
It was such a simple idea.
And yet…
"Why the hell didn't we think of that?"
Tendo Choi blinked.
Tendo: "Wait… that… that actually makes sense!"
Herc Hansen: "That's bloody brilliant."
Raleigh Becket: "We can kill a Kaiju, strap the bomb to it, and let it sink into the Breach on its own."
Everyone in the room exchanged glances.
This could actually work.
Pentecost: "Alright. That's the plan. We take down a Kaiju, secure the bomb to its body, and let it drop."
There was a shift in the air.
For the first time since the meeting started, there was a feeling of hope.
With the plan set, the pilots moved fast.
The engineers made final checks on all Jaegers, ensuring that weapons were operational and that the bomb was ready to be deployed.Mechanics ran tests on Rajah's new sensory system, making sure Shane would be able to detect incoming Kaiju before they could ambush him.Technicians synchronized the radio communication between all deployed Jaegers and the command center.
Meanwhile, Shane had one last request.
He went to the engineering bay and met wi h his personal team of mechanics.
Shane: "I need a failsafe."
They looked at him, confused.
Mechanic: "Failsafe for what?"
Shane exhaled.
Shane: "If this plan fails… we need a backup detonation method. Something remote. Something manual."
The engineers exchanged glances, then quickly nodded.
They worked fast, installing a manual detonator switch inside Rajah's cockpit. It was risky, but if the bomb didn't go off inside the Breach, Shane—or any pilot still alive—could manually detonate it from a distance.
He wasn't going to take any chances.
As the final checks were completed, the four Jaegers stood inside the deployment bay, towering over the people below.
The pilots suited up, stepping into their respective cockpits.
One by one, their systems came to life.
Crimson Typhoon – Three pilots, one body. The Wei Tang brothers synchronized their neural links perfectly.Striker Eureka – The father-and-son team, Herc and Chuck, prepared for what could be their final fight together.Gipsy Danger – Raleigh and Mako exchanged a nod, both knowing what was at stake.Rajah – Shane activated his new sensory system, watching as his radar picked up every movement in the ocean below.
From the control room, Tendo Choi gave the final countdown.
Tendo: "All systems green. Pilots, are you ready?"
One by one, they responded.
Raleigh Becket: "Gipsy Danger, standing by."
Herc Hansen: "Striker Eureka, locked and loaded."
Wei Tang Brothers: "Crimson Typhoon, systems online."
Shane: "Rajah, fully operational. "
Pentecost stood tall, looking at the massive screens displaying the Jaegers' systems.
He took a deep breath.
Then, he gave the final order.
Pentecost:
"Deploy."
The Shatterdome rumbled as the Jaegers were launched into the ocean, one by one.
The mission had begun.
The war for humanity's survival had reached its final stage.
