A Whispered Truth

Chapter 22: A Whispered Truth

Mai's hands trembled as she stepped out of the throne room, her mind reeling from the vision she had just witnessed. The phantom slash on her neck no longer burned, but the weight of what she had seen lingered like a shadow pressing against her chest.

She had seen the future—King Eric's monstrous spirit, the blood-soaked throne, and the disaster awaiting her if she dared to continue. But what was she supposed to do now? Could she change fate?

Mai's feet carried her through the dimly lit hallways of the castle, her breaths shallow and uneven. Servants passed by, bowing slightly, but she barely noticed them. She needed to find Sofia.

She found Sofia in a secluded corridor near the servants' quarters. The older girl was wiping her hands on a cloth when she looked up, sensing Mai's unease.

"You look like you've seen a ghost," Sofia muttered, tossing the cloth aside.

Mai glanced around, ensuring no one was within earshot, before gripping Sofia's wrist. "Not a ghost," she whispered, voice shaking. "A vision."

Sofia's eyes darkened with concern. "Tell me everything."

They hurried to a storage room, shutting the door behind them. By the flickering lantern light, Mai recounted the vision—the King's sinister spirit, the prophecy, the blood, the tower. Every chilling detail spilled from her lips like a dam breaking.

Sofia listened in silence, her expression unreadable. When Mai finished, a heavy pause settled between them.

"You cannot tell anyone else," Sofia finally said, her voice hushed but firm. "Not even the Prince."

Mai swallowed hard. "I wasn't planning to."

"The King is already watching you closely," Sofia continued. "If he suspects you know more than you should, he will act before you have a chance to stop him."

Mai clenched her fists. "Then what do I do? The vision showed disaster—I can't just ignore it!"

Sofia exhaled, pacing slightly. "The tower… it must hold something crucial if the King fears you going there. We have to find a way to get there before he does."

Mai nodded, determination flaring in her chest. "Then we need a plan. And we need to act fast."

Sofia hesitated before gripping Mai's shoulders. "This path is dangerous. If you are truly the lost princess, you are more of a threat to the King than you realize. You need to be careful."

Mai's heart pounded. She had been thrown into a world of lies, power, and fate, but one thing was clear—she had to uncover the truth, no matter the risk.

And so, as the night deepened, the two girls whispered plans of secrets, shadows, and an uncertain future, knowing that one wrong step could cost them everything.
