Chapter 36: Signs of Pursuit

The air outside the cave was cold, carrying the scent of damp earth and distant rain. The eerie silence of the forest pressed down on us as we moved through the undergrowth, leaving the battlefield behind.

But I wasn't stupid.

The goblin archer had escaped. He'd bring others.

"We need to keep moving," I said, adjusting my grip on the newly acquired Hobgoblin Captain's sword. It was heavier than I was used to, but I could feel the difference in quality. This wasn't a rusted goblin blade—it was a real weapon.

Rhia walked beside me, her silver eyes scanning the darkness ahead. "I know," she said, flicking a strand of her silver hair behind her ear. "But running blindly won't help. We need to find a place to rest—just for a bit."

She wasn't wrong. I could already feel the strain from the last fight, and my stamina wasn't limitless. Even with my system boosting me, I wasn't invincible.

"Fine," I said. "But not for long."

The System's Warning

As we walked, my system screen flickered.

[System Notification!][Warning: Enemy forces detected nearby.][Recommended Action: Evade or prepare for battle.]

I froze.

Rhia noticed immediately. "What is it?"

"System's warning me," I muttered. "Enemies nearby."

She didn't hesitate. "Then we move. Now."

We picked up the pace, weaving through the trees as quietly as possible. The goblins tracking us would be faster in this terrain, but we had the advantage of knowing they were coming.

Still, my instincts told me one thing—this wasn't going to be an easy escape.

The Hunter Approaches

Fifteen minutes passed, and the sounds of the forest remained unnaturally still. Not even the insects chirped.

That's when I saw it.

A shadow moving between the trees.

Not just one. Three.

Their yellow eyes gleamed in the darkness, scanning the area.

"Scouts," I whispered.

Rhia cursed under her breath. "They're smart. They're checking the area before sending in a larger force."

I gripped my sword. "Then we take them out before they report back."

She nodded. "Quick and silent."

We moved fast.

Before the scouts could react, I was already behind the first one, slashing my sword through his back. He let out a strangled gasp before collapsing.

Rhia dashed forward, her daggers flashing under the moonlight as she slit the throat of the second.

The third turned to run—but I was faster.

I activated Devourer's Grasp and lunged, my shadowy tendrils grabbing onto his ankle. He screamed as I pulled him toward me, driving my sword into his chest.

The forest fell silent again.

But we both knew—this was just the beginning.
