Chapter 14: Finding the Vault

Austin's POV

We stared at the bartender in silence.

He let out a dry chuckle. “The vault? That place is a death trap. Guarded like hell itself. And if the magical authorities even suspect you’re after it? You’ll rot in in the dungeon.”

“We’ll take our chances,” I said. “Just tell us where it is.”

He studied us with keen interest. “You’re outsiders. Treasure hunters, I’m guessing. Everyone wants to know what’s inside that vault, but no one’s ever lived long enough to tell.”

He leaned in, lowering his voice. “I could help you. Get you close. Make sure no one questions why you’re here.”

Vanessa narrowed her eyes. “And what do you get out of it?”

“A chance to finally see what’s inside.” He tapped his fingers against the counter. “I’ve spent years hearing whispers, but no one ever comes back. I wanna know what’s so damn important that people are willing to die for it.”

Nope. Not again. I wasn’t trusting this one.
