Sophia was stunned. What was Robert talking about?
She didn’t understand the meaning behind Robert’s mysterious words.
But she knew he wouldn’t give her much time, so she decided to get straight to the point. “This document is just a gift for our meeting, but I…”
“Get to the point,” Robert’s voice was cold and low.
Sophia swallowed the rest of her words and took a deep breath before saying in a low voice, “I know Master Miller’s family is pressuring you to get married, so I want to propose a contract marriage. Would that be possible?”
Robert’s eyes turned icy in an instant. He didn’t say anything, just stared at her.
Her smile was polite but distant. Even though she was proposing something as serious as marriage, her eyes were calm, unlike the women who tried to flatter him to win his favor.
Even with a table between them, Sophia could feel the coldness radiating from Robert. But since he had asked her to speak her mind, she did.
However, the way he looked at her made her heart tremble.
“Well…” she broke the silence, trying to sound steady. “You’ve met with ten famous ladies this month, but none of them were chosen. It’s said that your mother gave you a deadline to pick a bride before the month ends.”
“I am offering myself as a candidate.
“We can have a five-year contract marriage. During those five years, I’ll be like a painting on your wall. You can take me out and show me off during festivals and holidays, but once they’re over, you can put me away without even looking at me.”
“For those five years, I can help Master Miller get anything you need. Just call me, and I’ll be there. After five years, our marriage will end, and I’ll leave with nothing.”
She was offering five years of her life to Robert.
But she wasn’t worried about him. Robert had no female companions, only men, and no scandals. There was no smoke without fire—he probably didn’t like women.
So what was there to be afraid of? She was marrying him just to make Joseph kneel before her!
Robert’s sharp eyes studied Sophia, and as she spoke, a rare smile flickered across his face.
When she finished, he turned and walked away.
Sophia saw this and, for the first time, panic flashed in her usually calm and serious eyes.
“Master Miller…” she called out.
Robert stopped when he heard her voice. Turning back, he looked at her with an unreadable expression and said in a low voice, “What are you standing there for? If you’re late, the civil affairs office will be closed.”
Sophia’s mind went blank for a second, then filled with excitement—he had just agreed to marry her through the contract.
She smiled with joy. “Okay.”
This time, she was taking control of her own destiny. No one could manipulate her anymore, not even Joseph.
She quickly picked up the document and followed Robert, trying to keep up with his unhurried pace.
Robert noticed and deliberately slowed down.
Suddenly, Sophia remembered her bet with Joseph. Her smile froze, and panic crept into her heart.
“Master Miller, I forgot to tell you something,” she spoke up. “I am still Joseph’s fiancée. Are you still willing to marry me?”
“Fiancée and wife are two different things,” Robert replied calmly without even looking back.
Sophia was stunned by his words.
Indeed.
Being a fiancée was not the same as being a wife.
She had feared that Robert might change his mind after learning she was Joseph’s fiancée.
Fortunately, he saved her from that worry.
When they walked out of the Civil Affairs Bureau, Sophia looked at the handsome and elegant Robert. “I have already signed the contract, Master Miller. Please sign it.” She held out the contract and a pen with both hands.
Robert didn’t even look at the document. Instead, he gazed deeply at Sophia, a strange emotion flickering in his eyes.
As if marrying her was the happiest thing for her today.
“No need. The wedding is already over,” he said, stepping into his car with his long, straight legs.
“Master Miller, you…” Sophia started, but Robert’s car sped away.
She looked at the contract in her hands with a complicated expression.
He just left like that, without even giving her any contact information.
The marriage certificate was still with him. If he didn’t give it to her, how was she supposed to face Joseph?
At that moment, her phone rang. It was her mother, Abigail. Sophia answered with a cold expression.
Abigail’s angry voice burst through the speaker. “Sophia! The Garcia Family’s young master kicked our entire family out of the villa today! My jewelry, my money, and my precious clothes are all gone! You need to come back and explain this to us!”
Sophia immediately understood—Joseph had taken action against her family to stop her from marrying someone else.
He was truly despicable.
Family had always been her weakness.
But Joseph didn’t realize that his scheming only made Sophia see the truth—she was nothing more than a tool to her family.
His plan was doomed to fail.
