The woman's watery eyes gazed at him with deep affection, and for a moment, a strange feeling rose in Huo Tingxiao’s heart. But in the next second, he pushed her away roughly.
"It seems Miss Lin is still as shameless as ever."
Lin Wan was prepared this time. She only took two steps back before steadying herself.
She straightened her slightly messy skirt and placed the dishes aside.
"Honey, stay at home and behave. I'll be back soon."
Without waiting for his reply, she picked up her bag, twisted her waist, and walked out.
When the servant entered to clean up the dishes, he saw only the man on the bed, his face dark and cold.
"Get out!"
The servant was so scared that he almost ran to the door, quickly closing it behind him.
Lin Wan walked out of the old house and hailed a taxi.
Although Grandpa Huo had told her that if she needed to go out, she should have the servants take her, she didn’t want to trouble them. She also didn’t want to get involved in the hidden battles of the Huo family so soon.
Soon, the taxi arrived at the hospital entrance. Lin Wan paid and got out, but suddenly, she felt a sharp pain in her chest.
She instinctively pressed her hand over her heart, feeling uneasy. Without thinking about it further, she rushed into the hospital.
The hospital wasn’t very busy in the morning. Lin Wan hurried toward her grandmother’s ward, an unknown force urging her forward, making her desperate to see her.
She walked so fast that she almost bumped into someone on the way. She was about to apologize when she noticed the person’s panicked expression as they quickly ran past her.
Lin Wan had turned around too quickly, so she didn’t get a clear look at the person's face. She took a deep breath and continued walking toward her grandmother’s room.
Outside the ward, she took a moment to compose herself, putting on a bright smile before pushing the door open and stepping inside.
"Grandma..."
The bed was empty.
Lin Wan’s heart pounded as she searched the entire ward, but her grandmother was nowhere to be found.
Just then, the other patients returned to the ward. When they saw her, they let out sighs of regret.
Lin Wan’s anxiety grew stronger. She quickly rushed over to a woman and grabbed her hand.
"Auntie, have you seen my grandma? Did she go out to get water or sit in the sun outside? She..."
The middle-aged woman gently patted her hand and said softly, "Child, your grandmother just fainted. The doctors took her to the emergency room."
Lin Wan felt like her mind had exploded. The woman was still talking, but she couldn’t hear anything.
Her legs went numb, and she almost collapsed. The middle-aged woman quickly caught her.
"Don't panic, child. Maybe it's nothing serious. You need to stay calm so you can handle the situation properly."
Lin Wan forced herself to calm down. She turned to look at her grandmother’s empty bed, trying to suppress the sorrow rising in her heart. She held onto the woman in front of her.
"Auntie, what happened? The doctor said my grandma’s condition had stabilized. How could this happen..."
Her voice was rushed and anxious. Even though she was trying to hold back her tears, anyone could hear the sadness in her tone.
The middle-aged woman exchanged glances with the other patients in the room. A hint of pity flashed in her eyes, but despite their silent warnings, she sighed and pulled Lin Wan out of the ward.
"Child, early this morning, I vaguely saw someone enter the ward. I thought it was a nurse doing rounds, so I didn’t pay much attention. Later, your grandmother followed them out. I assumed she was going for surgery early. But not long after, doctors and nurses rushed in, and that’s when I found out your grandmother had fainted."
Lin Wan's nails dug into the cold wall. The sharp pain in her fingertips reminded her to stay calm.
"Auntie, did you see what that person looked like?"
The middle-aged woman shook her head but kindly advised, "Go wait outside the emergency room. Maybe she’ll be out soon. Your grandmother has been in good spirits these past few days. She always talks about you."
Lin Wan nodded, trying to steady herself. Then, she ran toward the emergency room.
Outside the emergency room, she collapsed onto the cold floor, staring at the door, afraid to miss any sign of movement.
Her red dress had wrinkled, but she didn’t care. All she could think about was the excitement and joy she had felt that morning when she left home. Now, she could only smile bitterly.
She had worked so hard and endured so much. Just as her grandmother was about to recover, why did this have to happen?
The corridor was eerily silent. Lin Wan even held her breath, afraid to miss a sound from inside the emergency room.
It felt like a century had passed before the door finally opened.
The first person to step out was her grandmother’s attending physician. Lin Wan rushed forward eagerly.
"Dr. Chen! How is my grandma? Is she..."
She didn’t dare to say the words. But looking at the doctor's serious expression, her heart skipped a beat.
"Miss Lin, heart patients cannot handle too much stress. Your grandmother is old, which makes it even more dangerous for her. She’s stable now, but remember, she cannot go through this kind of shock again. You need to talk to her about happy things and keep her in a good mood. Do you understand?"
Lin Wan nodded repeatedly, thanking him over and over again. Her heart was filled with joy at the thought that she hadn’t lost her grandmother.
After the doctor left, she immediately called the orphanage and arranged for someone to take care of her grandmother.
Then, she went to the nurse’s station and asked for help checking the security footage from the morning. But she was told that the hospital’s surveillance system was being upgraded. The old cameras in that area had already been removed, and the new ones hadn’t been installed yet.
Lin Wan’s heart sank. She felt like all the strength had been drained from her body.
She walked back to the ward with heavy steps.
Inside, she saw her grandmother lying on the bed, pale and weak. Tears welled up in Lin Wan’s eyes.
"Why does she have to suffer so much when she’s such a good person?"
She buried her face in the sheets, her shoulders trembling slightly.
The other patients in the ward watched silently. Only the middle-aged woman from earlier walked over and gently patted Lin Wan’s back, her voice full of warmth.
"If you want to cry, go ahead and cry. Don’t hold it in. It’s not good for your health."
Lin Wan’s back trembled even more, but she still didn’t make a sound.
She didn’t dare cry out loud, afraid of worrying the people around her.
After a long time, the frail hand under the blanket moved slightly.
Lin Wan’s eyes widened. She quickly wiped her tear-streaked face and leaned in.
"Grandma, Grandma, are you awake?"
