I walk through the front door, dropping my backpack on the floor. I'm exhausted from a long day at school, and all I want to do is grab a snack and start my homework.
But as I enter the living room, I'm surprised to see a familiar face. Uncle Peter, Mom's younger brother, is sitting on the couch, chatting with Mom, Dad and Eniola.
Eniola sees me first and squeals with excitement. "Kate! Kate! Uncle Peter is here!"
I force a smile onto my face, feeling a bit uncertain. I haven't seen Uncle Peter since my birthday and I'm not sure what to make of his sudden arrival.
"Hi, Uncle Peter," I say, trying to sound casual.
Uncle Peter stands up and gives me a warm hug. "Hey, kiddo! It's great to see you again."
Mom smiles and explains, "Peter's going to be staying with us for a while. He's going through a tough time, and we're happy to have him here."
I nod, still feeling a bit unsure. I'm not sure what to make of Uncle Peter's arrival, or what it will mean for our family.
Eniola on the other hand, is thrilled. She's bouncing up and down, chatting excitedly with Uncle Peter.
As I watch them, I feel a pang of unease. I'm not sure why, but something about Uncle Peter's presence makes me feel uncomfortable.
I shake off the feeling, telling myself I'm just being silly. After all, Uncle Peter is family. And we're happy to have him here, right?
As the days go by, I start to feel more comfortable around Uncle Peter. He's been helping out around the house, cooking dinner and even driving Eniola and me to school. He's always making jokes and trying to make us laugh.
Eniola, in particular, has taken to Uncle Peter. She loves playing games with him and going on walks around the neighborhood. I can see the excitement in her eyes whenever he's around.
I have to admit, I'm starting to enjoy Uncle Peter's company too. He's been teaching me how to cook some of his favorite dishes, and we've been having some great conversations about school and life.
One evening, as we're sitting down to dinner, Uncle Peter asks me about my day. I tell him about a project I'm working on in school, and he listens attentively, asking questions and making suggestions.
Eniola chimes in, telling Uncle Peter about her day, and soon we're all laughing and chatting like we've known Uncle Peter forever.
For the first time since his arrival, I feel like I can finally relax around him. Maybe, just maybe, having Uncle Peter around won't be so bad after all.
