Chapter 4

To my surprise, before even half of the freshly boiled water was poured into the cup, Callie's hand suddenly trembled, and all the water spilled out of the cup. I didn't have a chance to shake the kettle away, and the scalding water poured directly onto her hand.

"Ah! It's so hot!"

Callie let out a scream, withdrawing her burned hand.

Rylan rushed out of the kitchen in a hurry. Seeing this scene, he shouted angrily without a second thought:

"Elise, what are you doing!"

"How can you be so vicious? Don't you know Callie's hands are for holding surgical instruments?"

"What if they're burned so badly she can never hold a scalpel again? You're ruining her entire life!"

Watching Rylan turn cold towards me for Callie's sake, I pressed my lips together as my pounding heart slowly grew cold.

I looked down at my own hands.

Just now when Callie couldn't hold the cup steady, a lot of the spilled water had also splashed onto my hands.

Some areas were red too.

But Rylan couldn't see that.

He could only see that Callie's hands were burned.

"Elise, if Callie's hands really can't hold surgical instruments anymore, don't even think about getting a marriage license with me!" Rylan's eyes blazed red as he snarled viciously.

Without so much as a glance in my direction, he escorted Callie to the bedroom and fetched the first aid kit to tend to her wounds.

After addressing her injuries temporarily, he rushed her to the hospital for a thorough examination.

I surveyed the chaotic kitchen, suddenly overcome by a wave of exhaustion.

I, too, left the house, heading straight to apply for a visa.

Three days later, my visa was approved.

Callie's hand injury appeared to be quite severe, as Rylan had been giving me the cold shoulder for three consecutive days.

Just as I received my visa, Rylan called: "Elise, you still owe Callie an apology. She's kind-hearted and doesn't hold it against you for intentionally scalding her hand, but I can't let you bully her like this."

I replied calmly, "Rylan, you're dreaming. It was just an accident, and I won't apologize."

"Fine, you won't apologize, huh?"

"Then forget about getting our marriage license!"

Fuming, Rylan abruptly hung up.

I didn't even have a chance to tell him that I no longer intended to marry him anyway.

Five years had been enough for me to see Rylan's true colors.

I glanced at the visa in my hand and the suitcase beside me.
