Chapter 4

Grandma Blackwood's birthday celebration drew quite a crowd to the old family mansion.

As the Blackwood father and son's reputation in the business world continued to grow, nearly everyone seeking to network had shown up for the party.

After some careful grooming, Serena looked young and beautiful, her white dress accentuating her gentle and elegant appearance.

Standing beside her, Calvin had his arm around her waist as they toasted the guests, looking every bit like a married couple.

I gazed intently at the two of them on stage, looking so perfect together.

The heart beating in my chest felt like it was being squeezed by a giant hand, making it hard to breathe.

A servant standing nearby noticed me, seeming to pick up on my unsightly expression. He hurried over, respectfully calling out, "Miss Channing, you've arrived."

The guests, who had been chatting merrily, suddenly fell silent. They scrutinized me with inquisitive looks, then turned their attention to the pair at the center.

Whispers drifted from behind me: "So she's the one who's going to be the future Blackwood daughter-in-law."

"Then who's that standing there..."

"Hush, we shouldn't discuss such private matters. It'd be unwise to offend the Blackwood family."I grip my fists tightly at my sides, forcing a dignified smile as Calvin's gaze falls upon me.

However, my presence not only fails to curb Calvin's behavior but seems to embolden him further.

In front of all the guests, he brazenly walks up to me while holding Serena's hand intimately. "Why are you so late? You clearly lack the awareness of what it means to be the future daughter-in-law of the Blackwood family."

"If you can't fulfill your role as a daughter-in-law properly, perhaps you should step aside for someone else."

Though Calvin doesn't explicitly name anyone, it's clear to everyone that his preferred choice is Serena, whom he's holding close.

Calvin frowns, his eyes filled with contempt as he looks me up and down. "I really wonder if I was out of my mind back then, to even consider being with you. You're truly beneath my class."

As soon as he says this, the guests start eyeing me strangely, with hushed discussions breaking out.

He completely ignores the color draining from my face, his gaze softening as he turns to Serena.

With his arm around Serena's waist, Calvin announces loudly to the guests, "My engagement to Davina was never of my own free will."Davina, are you absolutely certain about this? Don't come to regret it later."

I shook my head. "I won't regret it. Ever."

I took off the jade bracelet from my wrist, the heirloom passed down to the Blackwood family's daughters-in-law, and handed it to Serena. "This belongs to you now."

Calvin's expression darkened inexplicably as he looked at Serena's wrist. "Davina, have you really thought this through?"Even if you kneel on the ground and beg to come back to me in the future, I won't agree."

I said expressionlessly, "Alright, I understand."

"Don't worry, I won't cause you any trouble in the future."

I quickly turned around, ready to leave the Blackwood family mansion without looking back.

From behind me, Calvin's mocking voice came again: "Just wait and see, I know her too well. She'll be begging for my forgiveness within three days."

Hearing this, my expression froze.

Then I took out my phone and dialed that number I hadn't saved yet.

"Will you marry me?"
