Maybe, Just Maybe

The rest of the day passed in a blur, but my mind kept circling back to that moment with Emma. The way she smiled when she said, "I'm glad you did." It was just a simple sentence, yet it played on repeat in my head like a song stuck on loop.

Was I reading too much into it? Or did she actually mean something more?

I needed answers, but I also knew one thing for sure—I wasn't going to rush it.

---

During lunch, I spotted Emma sitting with her usual group of friends, laughing over something on her phone. For a second, I hesitated. I had never really approached her when she was with her friends before. It was always just the two of us—either in class, after school, or in the café.

Would it be weird if I joined her?

Before I could second-guess myself, she looked up and met my gaze. Her smile widened, and she waved me over. That was all the encouragement I needed.

I grabbed my tray and made my way toward them.

"Hey, Jake," Emma said as I sat down beside her. "Big move, sitting with the popular table."

I smirked. "I like to live dangerously."

Her best friend, Sophie, gave me a playful look. "So, you're the guy Emma's been hanging out with lately?"

Emma's eyes widened slightly, and she nudged Sophie under the table. "Sophie…"

"What? I'm just saying," Sophie teased, grinning. "It's cute."

I felt my ears heat up, but I managed to keep my voice steady. "Guilty as charged. She needed a tutor, and I—"

"Don't downplay it," Emma cut in. "He's actually been really helpful."

Sophie exchanged a knowing glance with another girl at the table. "Helpful, huh?"

Emma rolled her eyes but smiled. "Ignore them. They love drama."

I chuckled. "Noted."

Despite the teasing, I felt surprisingly comfortable sitting there. Emma's friends weren't as intimidating as I had expected. In fact, they were actually cool. And the fact that Emma didn't seem embarrassed to have me there—that meant something, didn't it?

As lunch went on, I caught her looking at me a few times, and each time, she quickly glanced away, like she'd been caught. That had to mean something.

Maybe, just maybe, I wasn't imagining things after all.

---

After school, as I was packing up my books, Emma appeared beside my desk.

"Hey, I was wondering…" She hesitated, tucking a loose strand of hair behind her ear. "Are you free after school tomorrow?"

My heart jumped. "Uh, yeah. Why?"

She smiled. "There's this spot near the lake I like to go to sometimes. It's quiet, good for clearing your mind. Thought you might like it."

She was inviting me somewhere?

Alone?

I nodded, trying to stay cool. "Yeah, sounds great."

She grinned. "Awesome. Meet me by the front gate after last period."

With that, she walked off, leaving me standing there, gripping my bag straps like an idiot.

This was it.

This was more than just studying. More than just a casual hangout.

It was something.

And I wasn't going to mess it up.
