The narrow mountain path stretched like an endless snake through the gloomy peaks. Every step echoed ghostly in the quiet night. Elara and Kael felt the cold presence of Malakar in every shadow, in every breath of wind.
"The whispers have stopped," Kael remarked softly.
Elara nodded, her eyes wandering scrutinizingly through the surroundings. "Yes... but that doesn't make it better. It feels like we're in a storm's eye."
Suddenly, the ground under them began to shive. Rock splintered, and out of the rocks grew bony hands, stretching out after them.
"Damn, I knew it!" Kael jumped back, just in time, before a hand grabbed his leg.
Figures rose from the shadows - warriors in tattered armor, their eyes glowing with an unnatural light. Their bodies were made of withered flesh and ancient bones.
"The Lost..." whispered Elara in fright.
These creatures were once legendary warriors who had failed in the search for Malakar - and are now doomed for all eternity to walk as his servants.
A particularly large warrior stepped forward. His armor was heavy and black, with deep scars from past battles. In his hands he held a huge axe.
"Intruders..." his voice growled like a thunder.
Kael raised his sword. "Intruders? You are the ones who crawl out of the ground!"
Elara put a hand on Kael's shoulder. "These are not just undead warriors. They were cursed by Malakar himself. We have to be careful."
The great warrior raised his axe. "No mortal may enter this path with impunity!"
With a shocking cry, the lost pounded on them.
Kael dodged the first shot and countered with a quick blow. His sword hit the breastplate of one of the warriors - but instead of cutting through flesh, the blow was absorbed by an invisible force.
"Damn it! They are protected by magic!"
Elara concentrated. Her hands lit up as she conjured up a blade of light. "Then we must fight her with the only power that helps against Malakar's curse - light magic!"
With a powerful swing, she tore her blade through the air, and the light exploded in a dazzling wave. The first warriors screamed when their damned souls were consumed by the light.
But the great warrior stopped. He raised his axe - and a black flash came down from the sky, soaking him with new dark power.
"You will not pass."
He attacked with incredible speed, his axe racing on Elara. She raised her blade, but the force of the blow was too great - she was thrown back and hit a rock.
"Elara!" Kael grabbed his sword with both hands, his eyes sparkling with anger.
The warrior straightened up to his full size. "I was once the greatest warrior in my kingdom. And I fell... because I underestimated Malakar."
Kael clenched his fists. "Then you were an idiot."
A sinister laugh came out of the warrior's armor. "Then prove to me that you're better."
Kael gritted his teeth. "With pleasure."
He jumped forward, his sword wrapped in a blue flame - ready to take up the fight against the fallen warrior.
