Chapter 40: The First Ordinary Person to Capture a Pokémon

"Ryo! Ryo! Haha! I did it! I captured a Pokémon! Hahaha!"

Not long after Hiruzen Sarutobi had left, Ryo had just sat down when he heard Old Feng's excited voice coming from outside.

Hearing this, Ryo couldn't help but smile as he turned toward the voice.

Old Feng came bounding over like a child, laughing uncontrollably.

"Ryo, thank you! Thank you so much! I succeeded!" Old Feng exclaimed without waiting for a response. He eagerly released his newly captured Pokémon.

Plop!

A small creature leapt out from the Pokéball and immediately lunged at Ryo.

Ryo caught it with swift reflexes. "Rattata? I didn't expect it to be you."

"Rattata? Is that its name?" Old Feng asked curiously.

"Yes, this Pokémon is called Rattata," Ryo nodded. "Congratulations, Old Feng. You've officially transcended ordinary status."

"No, no, it's all thanks to you," Old Feng said, waving his hands modestly.

Ryo glanced at the Rattata in his arms, but internally he was somewhat amused. He couldn't help recalling how skeptical Old Feng had been earlier. Yet now he was positively ecstatic.

Still caught up in his excitement, Old Feng asked, "Ryo, why is this Pokémon so much weaker compared to that Espeon you have?"

Ryo patiently explained the differences between the various Pokémon.

After listening, Old Feng's eyes grew resolute. "Ryo, give me a bag of basic energy cubes and a Pokédex."

Ryo raised an eyebrow, surprised by Old Feng's sudden enthusiasm. Nevertheless, he nodded, accepted the payment, and handed over the requested items.

With the items in hand, Old Feng waved goodbye and left.

With his departure, the wooden house fell into a brief quiet.

Time passed slowly.

The next morning, Ryo was in the Pokémon House, explaining the process of capturing Pokémon to a new customer.

"All right, that's everything. Just take the Pokéball and head to the back mountain. But I must warn you, any form of coercion will have serious consequences," Ryo said.

The ninja in front of him nodded solemnly and walked toward the mountain.

Phew… Ryo exhaled as he watched the customer leave. "I didn't expect business to pick up so suddenly."

He couldn't figure out why, but since early morning, customers had started showing up one after another. By now, he had already welcomed his fourth customer of the day.

"Still, it's a pretty good feeling!" Ryo muttered with a grin.

Every new customer meant more money—stable income at that.

"Asuma-sensei, are you sure this is the place? Did we take the wrong path?"

Ryo heard a voice from outside and turned his head, spotting four people entering the house.

His eyes lit up upon recognizing them. "I didn't expect these four to come too. With them here, the Twelve Guardian Ninja are almost fully gathered."

"Excuse me, are you the one offering the chance to capture Pokémon?" Asuma asked with a polite tone.

"Yes, this is the place. Are you all here to catch Pokémon?" Ryo replied.

Asuma nodded. "Yes, we are. Could you explain how it works?"

The concept of Pokémon was still a bit of a mystery to him. Last night, his father had asked him to bring his team here without much explanation.

Behind him, the Ino-Shika-Cho trio also looked at Ryo curiously, their expressions reflecting equal confusion. Unlike Asuma, they hadn't been given any context; they were simply told to gather and were brought straight to this location.

"We're clueless about Pokémon. How did you even find this place?" Ryo asked, equally puzzled.

Hearing this, the three turned to look at Asuma.

They were curious about this.

Asuma looked at their puzzled expressions and said, "It was the Third Hokage who told us to come here."

Ryo nodded, understanding the situation better.

He silently thought to himself, "So that explains it. The previous few ninjas who came were probably sent by Hiruzen Sarutobi as well."

As for the reason behind it—what else could it be other than to strengthen their abilities?

Hearing Asuma's explanation, the Ino-Shika-Cho trio became even more confused.

They couldn't understand why the Hokage would instruct them to capture creatures called Pokémon.

"Boss, could you please tell us more about these Pokémon?" Shikamaru quickly recovered and asked Ryo.

If the Hokage himself had made such a suggestion, it clearly meant that Pokémon were not ordinary creatures.

Ryo nodded and began explaining Pokémon to them.

As the explanation went on, their eyes widened, filled with surprise and disbelief.

When Ryo finished speaking, Ino couldn't hold back. "Boss, you're not trying to trick us, right? Are you seriously saying these Pokémon can reach Kage-level strength?"

Crunch.

Chōji nodded while munching on some chips. "Yeah, that sounds a bit far-fetched."

"Not necessarily," Shikamaru said, shaking his head with a serious expression.

Everyone, including Ryo, turned to look at Shikamaru curiously.

"What do you mean, not necessarily? That's way too unrealistic," Ino argued. To her, reaching Kage-level strength was a once-in-a-lifetime achievement, and now they were being told that Pokémon could reach such a level too?

Even though she still didn't fully understand what Pokémon were, the concept seemed absurd.
