Kaira stared at Adrian, her breath caught in her throat as the tension crackled between them. His words replayed in her mind, "I told you not to trust her." Alyssa stood a few feet behind her, visibly trembling, though her eyes burned with determination.
The silence felt like an eternity, broken only by the relentless rain that drenched them all. Kaira's pulse quickened as she realized she was standing on a precipice. Whom could she trust?
"Adrian," she finally said, her voice steady despite the chaos in her head. "If you want me to believe you, then tell me the truth. Why are they after me?"
Adrian hesitated, his jaw tightening as if weighing the cost of revealing something he couldn't take back. "You already know more than you should, Kaira," he said. "But if you want answers, you'll have to trust me enough to leave with me. Now."
Alyssa lunged forward, grabbing Kaira's wrist. "He's lying! I have proof. I can show you everything—just don't go with him!"
The rain felt colder suddenly, piercing through Kaira's coat. She pulled her arm away from Alyssa and looked between the two of them. "Enough!" she shouted, the frustration bubbling over. "Both of you—start talking, or I'm walking away from both of you."
Adrian sighed, his eyes softening slightly. "The people chasing you—chasing us—are part of a group called The Order. They think you have something that belongs to them. And they'll do anything to get it back."
Kaira's heart sank. "The map," she whispered.
He nodded. "It's more than a map. It's a key, Kaira. And you're the only one who can use it."
Alyssa scoffed. "That's what they want you to think! Adrian works for them, Kaira. He's been playing you from the start."
Kaira's stomach turned. "Adrian?"
His gaze didn't waver. "She's lying."
A flash of headlights swept across the alley as the black SUV screeched to a halt at the far end. Doors slammed, and dark silhouettes stepped out, their movements purposeful and swift.
"We don't have time for this," Adrian said, grabbing her arm. "Choose now, Kaira. Come with me, and I'll protect you. Stay here, and you're on your own."
Alyssa grabbed her other arm. "You don't need him! I have a safe place we can go—somewhere they'll never find you."
Kaira froze, torn between the two. The approaching figures were getting closer, their voices sharp and commanding. Her instincts screamed at her to move, but which way?
Finally, she made her decision.
Later that Night
The safe house was a modest cabin tucked away in the woods, far from the prying eyes of the city. Kaira sat by the fireplace, her thoughts racing. She had chosen Alyssa, convinced by her urgency and the photograph of Adrian that still lingered in her mind.
Alyssa placed a steaming cup of tea in front of her and sat across the small table. "You made the right choice," she said, her voice soft but firm.
"Did I?" Kaira murmured, staring into the flames.
Before Alyssa could respond, a knock echoed through the cabin, sharp and deliberate.
Kaira's heart leapt. "You said this place was safe."
"It is," Alyssa whispered, her face pale. She grabbed a knife from the kitchen counter and signaled for Kaira to stay put.
The knock came again, louder this time.
Alyssa hesitated for a fraction of a second before swinging the door open.
Adrian stood on the porch, his face shadowed by the porch light. His coat was soaked, and his expression was unreadable.
"You chose wrong," he said, stepping inside without invitation.
Kaira stood abruptly. "How did you find us?"
Adrian smirked, his eyes briefly flickering to Alyssa. "She wasn't as careful as she thought. But I didn't come here to argue." He pulled out a small, leather-bound notebook and placed it on the table.
"What is that?" Kaira asked.
"The truth," Adrian said simply.
Alyssa's hand tightened around the knife. "Don't listen to him, Kaira. He's just trying to confuse you."
Kaira looked between them again, her exhaustion mixing with the frustration of not knowing who to believe. "Why don't you want me to read it, Alyssa?" she asked.
Before Alyssa could answer, a faint hissing sound came from outside. Kaira moved to the window and peeked through the curtain. The SUV was back, parked at the edge of the clearing.
"They're here," Adrian said grimly, his eyes locking on hers.
Alyssa cursed under her breath. "We don't have time for this. We need to go—now!"
"No," Kaira said firmly, grabbing the notebook. "Not until I read this."
"Kaira—" Adrian started, but she had already opened the book.
Her eyes widened as she scanned the pages. Scribbled across them were names, dates, and locations—along with detailed descriptions of both Adrian and Alyssa.
"You were both lying," she whispered, her voice trembling.
"What?" Alyssa snapped, moving closer.
Kaira slammed the book shut and looked up, her fear giving way to anger. "You're both working for them. Aren't you?"
Neither of them answered.
The cabin door suddenly burst open, and three armed men stormed inside.
"Miss Kaira," one of the men said, his voice calm and calculated. "It's time to come with us."
Kaira backed away, clutching the notebook to her chest. Adrian and Alyssa exchanged a look before springing into action, but it was too late.
The men advanced, and the last thing Kaira saw was a syringe glinting in the firelight before darkness consumed her.
