Kael stepped into the dimly lit chamber, his heartbeat steady but his grip on his daggers firm. Vaelin Dusk stood before him, his silver hair catching the flickering torchlight.
The man did not turn immediately. Instead, he spoke—his voice low, knowing.
"I was wondering when you'd come."
Kael froze.
Vaelin slowly turned, his piercing gaze locking onto Kael's. There was no surprise in his eyes. Only recognition.
"He knows me."
Shattered Illusions
Kael kept his stance guarded. "You expected me?"
Vaelin sighed, crossing his arms. "The Syndicate did a fine job twisting you into their weapon. But I knew you'd find your way back eventually."
Kael's mind raced. "You knew me before."
Vaelin's gaze softened. "I trained you."
Kael took a sharp breath as the weight of those words settled in. Trained me? Then… everything Selis said was true.
"You're lying," Kael muttered, though doubt cracked in his voice.
Vaelin shook his head. "If I were, you would've killed me the moment you walked in."
Kael clenched his fists. His memories were fragmented, but something in Vaelin's presence felt familiar.
Then, Vaelin took a step closer. "Do you remember the oath we swore?"
A sudden flash—
The cold steel of a dagger against his palm.
A hand gripping his shoulder.
A voice in the dark—"We fight for the forgotten. We strike for the unseen."
Kael staggered back, gripping his head.
"I don't—" His breath was uneven. "I don't remember everything."
"But you remember enough," Vaelin said. His voice was calm, but there was something else there—a quiet sorrow.
Kael's pulse pounded. "Tell me the truth. What did the Syndicate do to me?"
The Betrayal Unveiled
Vaelin exhaled. "They wiped your past and reforged you in their image. You weren't just an assassin, Kael. You were their greatest weapon."
Kael's grip on his daggers tightened.
Vaelin continued, "When I discovered what they were doing, I tried to free you. But they were always one step ahead. They made you believe I was the enemy."
Kael's vision blurred as memories flickered at the edges of his mind—missions carried out in the Syndicate's name, faces he couldn't recall, an endless pursuit of a man he was told to kill.
Vaelin's voice was steady. "They didn't just erase your memories, Kael. They rewrote them."
The room suddenly felt smaller, the weight of the revelation pressing down on him. Everything he knew… was a lie.
Selis had died trying to bring him the truth.
And now, he finally had it.
A New Purpose
Kael took a slow breath, his thoughts racing. "Then why didn't you stop me before?"
Vaelin's expression darkened. "Because I needed you to remember on your own. If I had come for you too soon, the Syndicate's programming would have made you kill me without question."
Kael looked down at his hands. How many lives had he taken for them?
Vaelin's voice was grim. "The Syndicate won't let you go, Kael. Now that you remember, they'll hunt you to the ends of the earth."
Kael lifted his gaze, the fire inside him reigniting.
"Then let them come."
