The Door of Twilight

Reinhardt and Selene stepped beyond the veil of shadows, their boots echoing against the cold stone floor. The passage ahead was narrow, its walls lined with symbols pulsing faintly with ancient magic. The air was thick with something unseen—a presence watching, waiting.

Selene traced a rune with her fingertips. "This magic is old. Older than the Order, older than even the kingdoms we know."

Reinhardt remained tense, scanning the corridor. "And yet, it still lingers. Why?"

A whisper slithered through the dark. "Because power never fades, only waits to be claimed."

The voice was neither human nor entirely unnatural. It was something in between, a presence that existed beyond mortal comprehension.

Reinhardt reached for his sword, but Selene stopped him with a glance. "If it wanted us dead, we wouldn't have made it this far."

She turned back to the passage. Ahead, a massive stone door loomed, carved with intricate designs of figures bowing before a towering, faceless entity. The symbols glowed as Selene approached, the magic responding to her presence.

Reinhardt frowned. "What is this place?"

Selene's gaze darkened. "The Door of Twilight."

The name sent a shiver through Reinhardt's spine. He had heard whispers of it before—an ancient gateway said to lead to forbidden knowledge. A place where truths could be rewritten.

Selene placed her palm against the door. The moment her skin met the stone, the ground trembled. The carvings shifted, their figures twisting into grotesque, writhing shapes.

A voice—deep, hollow, endless—echoed from beyond the door. "Only those who abandon their past may step forward. What will you surrender?"

Reinhardt's throat tightened. He had already given up so much—his allegiance, his home, his certainty. What more could he lose?

Selene's eyes gleamed. "I will surrender my name," she said softly.

The runes flared, a pulse of power rippling outward.

Reinhardt turned to her in shock. "Selene—"

She smiled, but there was something sad in it. "Names hold power, Reinhardt. Mine has tied me to a destiny I no longer want."

Before he could argue, the door groaned open, revealing a swirling abyss of shadows.

Selene stepped forward. Then, after a brief hesitation, Reinhardt followed.

As the door sealed behind them, the past was left behind. And the unknown awaited.
