The air in the training grounds had shifted. It wasn't something spoken, but something felt—like the hush before a storm. The days of routine drills and sparring matches had become more intense, more focused. For Elara, it was another step toward proving herself, another chance to silence the doubt that loomed over her.
Yet, today, something was different.
From his post near the high tower, Keshav stood watching, his expression unreadable. He was Damien's most trusted confidant, a man who spoke only when necessary. His sharp eyes had seen more than most, and his silence often carried more weight than words ever could. He had been by Damien's side since their youth—a bond forged in blood and loyalty. And now, as he observed Elara, something flickered in his gaze.
Damien, on the other hand, was more occupied with his usual responsibilities, barely sparing glances at the recruits unless absolutely necessary. But Elara had noticed something—his presence was never unnoticed. The way the knights moved when he passed, the way noblewomen found reasons to linger near his training grounds, and, of course, the way Princess Seraphina's eyes followed him.
Seraphina was a distraction, but not for Elara. Not yet.
She had no reason to care for the way Seraphina always found ways to engage Damien in conversation, nor for how Damien responded—brief, polite, but never inviting. If anything, she found it amusing how uninterested he seemed despite the obvious admiration thrown his way.
"You there!" the drill instructor barked, snapping Elara out of her thoughts. "Are you here to train or daydream?"
Elara straightened. Focus. She had no time for distractions, no time to dwell on matters that didn't concern her.
From the sidelines, Kai chuckled. "Careful, Elar. Next thing you know, you'll get caught staring at someone important."
Elara scoffed. "As if I'd be foolish enough for that."
Keshav, still silent, watched the exchange before finally turning away. Whatever thoughts he had remained unspoken, locked away behind his ever-calm expression.
Little did Elara know, she had begun drawing the attention of more than just her fellow recruits.
