Damien's sudden arrival had been enough to send the cloaked figures retreating into the forest, but the tension they left behind hung heavy in the air. "What's going on here?" Damien demanded, his gaze sweeping over Elara and Keshav, then lingering on the spot where the woman with the emerald eyes had stood.
"They... they were asking questions," Keshav said, his voice carefully neutral. "Claimed we were trespassing."
Damien's eyes narrowed. He wasn't buying it. "Questions about what?"
"Just... the usual," Keshav replied, his jaw tight. "Border patrols, bandit activity."
Elara remained silent, her heart pounding in her chest. She could feel Damien's suspicion, like a physical weight pressing down on her. The woman's words echoed in her mind: "We know who you really are, Elijah."
Damien turned his attention to Elara, his gaze piercing and intense. "Elijah? Did they say anything to you?"
Elara forced herself to meet his gaze, her mind racing. How much should she reveal? How much could she reveal without exposing her secret? "They... they seemed confused," she stammered. "Like they thought I was someone else."
Damien studied her for a long moment, his expression unreadable. Elara held her breath, praying he wouldn't see through her deception.
Finally, he sighed and turned away. "Alright. Let's get back to the fortress. This mission is compromised."
The journey back was agonizingly slow. Elara could feel Damien's eyes on her, watching her every move. She knew he was suspicious, and it was only a matter of time before he uncovered the truth.
Keshav remained silent beside her, his presence a strange mixture of comfort and unease. She couldn't tell if he suspected anything, but she knew he was loyal to Damien above all else.
As they approached the fortress gates, Elara made a decision. She couldn't keep living this lie. She had to tell Damien the truth, no matter the consequences.
But when she looked at his hardened face, she hesitated. Would he understand? Or would he see her as a traitor, a deceiver?
That night, Elara lay awake in her cot, staring at the ceiling. The woman's words haunted her: "You can't hide from who you are."
She knew they were right. She couldn't keep running from her past. But she also couldn't risk losing everything she had worked for.
With a heavy heart, she made a vow. She would tell Damien the truth... but not yet. Not until she had a better understanding of who those people were and what they wanted. Not until she was sure she could protect herself and the people she cared about.
But as she drifted off to sleep, she couldn't shake the feeling that time was running out. The shadows were closing in, and the web of deceit was tightening around her.
