Chapter 7: Allies and Enemies

The next morning, Adrian found himself sitting in a dingy diner on the outskirts of town. The place was nearly empty, save for a few truckers nursing cups of coffee and a waitress who looked like she'd seen better days. He sipped his own coffee, staring at the cracked screen of his laptop as he reviewed the notes Melissa had sent him.

Dr. Evelyn Harper's name appeared repeatedly in the files, often linked to classified projects with ominous titles like "Project MindForge" and "Neural Dominion." Her credentials were impressive—a PhD in neuroscience, years of research at top-tier institutions, and glowing recommendations from colleagues. But beneath the surface, there was something darker. Notes scribbled in the margins of reports hinted at ethical concerns, warnings ignored, and experiments pushed beyond safe limits.

Adrian tapped his fingers nervously on the table. Finding Evelyn wouldn't be easy. She'd gone off the grid for a reason, and anyone connected to her was likely being watched. Still, he had to try.

His phone buzzed, startling him. It was a text from an unknown number:

"If you're looking for Evelyn, meet me at the old clock tower at sunset. Come alone."

Adrian frowned. Was this a trap? Or someone trying to help? Either way, he didn't have much choice. If this person knew where Evelyn was, he had to take the risk.

The Clock Tower

As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting long shadows across the city, Adrian approached the old clock tower. It stood tall and decrepit, its hands frozen at 11:59—a fitting metaphor for the world he now found himself in.

A figure stepped out from behind a pillar, her face partially obscured by a hood. She was tall and slender, with sharp features and piercing green eyes that seemed to see right through him.

"You're Carter," she said, her voice low and cautious.

"And you are?" Adrian asked, keeping his distance.

"My name's Rachel. I used to work with Evelyn. She trusts me—or at least, she did."

Adrian studied her carefully. Something about her demeanor suggested she wasn't lying, but trust was a luxury he couldn't afford anymore. "Where is she?"

Rachel hesitated, glancing over her shoulder as if expecting someone to appear. "She's in hiding. For good reason. If you want to find her, you'll need to prove you're worth the risk."

"How do I do that?" Adrian asked.

Rachel reached into her coat and pulled out a flash drive. "This contains data Evelyn extracted before she disappeared. It's incomplete, but it's enough to give you a clearer picture of what you're dealing with. Take it. Study it. Then decide if you're ready to join the fight."

Adrian took the flash drive, his mind racing. This was more than he'd hoped for—but it also meant the stakes were higher than ever.

"One last thing," Rachel said, turning to leave. "Watch your back. Not everyone who wants to help you actually does."

With that, she vanished into the shadows, leaving Adrian alone with the weight of her words—and the knowledge that the road ahead would be fraught with danger.
